Question about alert levels

Post by Mgellis »

Coming a bit late to the party here, but I'm trying to wrap my head around how to use alert levels (green, yellow, etc.)

As I understand it, you can set several different intermittent settings for sensors (each one is linked to an alert level). Each unit has to be set up separately, so units can have completely different settings. For example, I could have one ship emit for 20 seconds out of every 60, and have another one emit for 30 seconds out of every 60, both as part of the "blue" alert setting. And I could set up different settings for yellow, orange, etc.

Any unit that does not have alert levels set will have all of the alerts set on "continuous" by default. That is, they will either be on or off depending on circumstances.

Normally, everyone on the side will have the same setting (e.g., blue) but I can use a separate alert level for missions. For example, I might have the default alert for the side as blue, but one group on a specific mission can be set for orange, which has different intermittent emission settings than blue. (Again, each unit would have to have their own emissions settings for blue alert and for orange alert, unless I just want to leave them on "continuous.") When the mission is active, that group will switch to orange alert, but everyone else will stay on blue alert.

Am I getting this right? Anything else I need to know about this feature?

Thanks in advance.

There is an OK write up in the unofficial doc...https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 7#p5185837

But you have the general gist of it. The important complication is the lack of intermittency in missions. It means that you have to play around very carefully with Alert levels because Alert level is side-based. So trying to manipulate emcoms for intermittency as missions change is difficult. For example, if I have a CSG and I only want the lead ship on the mission to intermittently pulse, I have to set the individual ship outside the mission. But if I want the ship to go into another mission, it'll take that intermittency with it. To change the intermittency, I have to again micromanage its emcom outside mission building. That can start to get very complicated very quickly with the limited number of alerts. I've had to resort to lua, triggers, and events for intermittency management and skip alerts completely.

Its one of those CMO features that is a great addition, but just doesn't go that extra mile to make it completely usable. Of course I might be doing it completely wrong and someone can tell me a better way to do it.

It would be nice to get a feature to set intermittent config on a group of units (e.g., all units in a mission). Right now you have to either hand-select each unit or use a Lua script.

Is there any way to give multiple units the same intermittent sensor settings? For example, if you have a squadron of F-15s, you might not want to give each one its own unique sensor settings. Any way to "copy and paste" ?

I think using the ROE template feature might do it.

I just confirmed that you can use the ROE save template feature. Make you changes, save to template, then load that template to all the others. This is what the XML template looks like if you open it. It only outputs the non-inherited settings. So keep that in mind.

Note on this sub the only non-inherited settings were ignore plotted course and sonar active.
