Campaign Game! How about this?

Post by Capt Cliff »

I want a campaign game of all three battles, but computing power limits this. Ok, how about I play the south battle and exit units off the map, XXX Corp moving north. The game saves a file listing out when and where the units exited and the strength. Finish the southern battle and then fire up the middle battle and do the same. Units enter as reinforcement according to the file that was saved from the previous battle. If you can't get by Njimegan (SP) it's a moot point to play the Brits at Arnhem, just bring a sponge!!

Ok, I am heading to the bottom of my foxhole because there going to be some incoming stuff!!![:D]

Capt Cliff,

C'mon, the least you can do is stand up in that foxhole of yours and take it like a man. No wooses here, mate! [;)]

Paul and I have been discussing options for a campaign feature. We realise that many would like this. But it is no trivial undertaking. No promisses as to when, but we'll see what can be done to bring this feature forward on our wish list.

Campaign game here would be really hard to implement since battles on at least 3 (of 4) maps happened simoultaneously.

Best you can come up with is playing three separate scenarios representing "first day", then playing the "second day" based on results you get on the "first day" etc. - all the while counting units that reached this or that objective so that you can "transfer" them to another map tomorrow.

Very very very complicated.

BTW very good semi scripted, semi-dynamic campaign system with goals and units being transferred from map to map and from scenario to scenario can be found in Sub Command (nuke sub sim, totally unrelated to HTTR, I just use it as an example of good realistic campaign system).

Yes it is. They're working on a new naval game - Dangerous Waters. If you're interested in naval sims you should definitely chack that one out.

(Sorry for the OT thread hi jack)

Great idea, Capt. Cliff.

I think this would add a lot of tension in terms of getting those bridges cleared so that XXX Corps makes it (in strength) to Arnhem.

I can see the design issues here-do you exit the units off the Hell's Highway Northern map edge, and then those units can continue on? Or are all XXX Corps units eligible for advance if the bridges are intact-with a serious delay if they aren't? Can the US AB units advance as well to Arnhem as a varient? Lots of different things to consider here...

Also have to take into account the german's ability to cut the highways after the fact and the implications of the spearhead now being cut off and having to turn back to reopen it's supply lines.

It almost requires an entire game built on top of the existing game at a higher strat level with dynamic supply. Big project but certainly well worth it. We have the perfect engine for the area battles, we just need the Panther boys to build a perfect level above the game to handle getting from area to area and tracking overall progress.

Yep, thats how I see it as well. There would only be minor changes to the current game engine with a new Campaign engine (App) that controls the actual campaign progression. As you play each Scenario in the campaign the result would affect future scenarios.

You could do things like (still thinking HTTR here), if the Germans do well in a particular scenario you could launch an optional scenario where they get the chance to block the road. If they dont they miss that chance as they have to use all their resources on the next big battle [:)]. Could be quite interesting I think. It also might help those who would like a PBEM version, you could have a series of short sharp scenarios each running for a day or two so that you could be pretty much guaranteed to finish each engaement in only an hour or two of real time. Who cares if your opponent is on the other side of the world and you have to be up at 3am to do it [;)]

The issue I have with this kind of campaign is its artificiality - i.e. its semi-scripted 'linked scenario' nature. I'd find it frustrating not being able to choose my battlefield, make sweeping flanking maneouvres etc. Obviously for many this isn't a problem but I'd rather see Panther spending their time working on other areas/new games etc.

Just a very personal opinion[:)]

Understood Eric, I would not want them to stop going forward with the already planned games for this, but if they have some spare time to toss ideas around [;)]

Personal, but not unique. I agree 100%.

Rather than trying to turn the game into something it isn't, I far rather development effort was put into new scenarios and further games in the series. Maybe some sort of campaign option could be built into those from the start..... other games might be better suited to a campaign approach.

Sorry about the demands of the customers. Believe me I can identify with the phenomenom, as a zillion of them are constantly calling on my services also. It goes with the territory.......uh try not to be so successful and innovative.... if you can help it. Believe me we are in your (Dave and Steve & co.) debt for such a great game and are looking forward to the upcoming variants. Cloning is not perfected yet and good help is so hard to find so its just a matter of what degree of imperfection you can accept in your final product, the lower the degree, the less "free time" you'll have; one of the basic axioms of life. So "chill" guys... this life may only come around once, keep the proper perspective.....family first....sanity second....health third......uhhh the game, we can wait. From this appreciative customer......all I can say is HttR has been truly an enriching experience in this wargamer's life, ....what little time I get to play is treasured, ...thanks again guys.

The game is a masterpiece as is-but nothing wrong with a little devil's advocate...

Then back to the grindstone with you lot!! I want Crete! And Normandy! Ad Infinitum!![:D]

SeaMonkey, that should really be Dave & Paul & co. - I am a new arrival, being full-time only from last October. Dave & Paul & Sos have been putting heart and soul into the project for several years now and deserve all the credit.
