The number of Allied assaults on the line are smaller in numbers but in terms troops numbers still daunting for our troops in the defences, the enemy struck in three sectors of The Volturno line trying to smash through with superior numbers of men and tanks, Axis forces were able to hold there ground causing large losses against the attackers who forced back to the own lines. While the line held again the 264th Inf Div defending South of Capua airbase was severally mauled and will have to be pulled out of the line.
The good news is that we now have fresh troops that can replace the battered unit, also the enemy Armoured Div that was reported at Salerno has moved to the Biferno River sector, our forward units have identified it as the 6th South African Arm Div,
the HG Panzer Div that was redeployed to Frosinone for rest and refit is almost back to full strength a remarkable effort by all concerned, the unit is badly needed at this time.
With heavy fighting taking place in the lazio region reports reach Zeitzler from Luftflotte II HQ, recon aircraft flying patrols over the Island of Corsica have identified three Allied Naval Forces docked at ports across the Island as well as ground forces assembling possible preparing to launch a seaborne invasion to open a second front in Italy or Southern France.

After only just setting up his Command at Lyon and beginning a review of the forces under his control General Gustav Von Vaerst receives a report from the Headquarters of Kurt Zeitzler in Italy, Axis aircraft in action over the Ligurian Sea reported a large number of Allied Naval vessels docked at Porto Vecchio on the Island of Corsica.
A full aerial reconnaissance of the Island now confirms three Naval Task Forces, the second at Ajaccio with a third force berthed at Calvi, also observed on the ground where contingents of troops believed to be Fallschirmjäger.
Axis forces in the Umbria region are now on high alert for a possible airborne assault on the Italian mainland behind the Axis front line.
For Vaerst this report could not come at a worst time 19th Armee is badly under strength and in no position to appose a full scale invasion of Southern France if the Allies attack now.

In the far North enemy activity begins to increase, the 2nd Baltic Front's 37th Army orders Tank formations backed by Inf to advance towards 8th Armee /16th Armee positions, despite rain continuing to fall across the region and the ground heavy the enemy is to build up its forces along The Vetluga River.
On the 16th Armee / 4th Armee front the enemy buildup of armoured formations is concerning forward units reporting upwards of eight Tank Corps in front of the Gorky sector, the concentration of these forces could be part of a planned Red Army offensive to recapture Gorky, Ivanovo and Yaroslavl.
The encircled troops of Sokolov's 43rd Army are destroyed by Graessner ( XII ) and Weiss ( XXVII ) ArmeeKorps
South of the Barysh River two Soviet Fronts ( 1st Belorussian and 3rd Baltic ) have deployed and number of Inf units in the Saransk sector, the city is defended by IX ArmeeKorps ( 4th Armee ) troops which have fortified positions along the Insar River, the speed of the buildup in the North surprising Commanders considering all the fighting by the enemy had been directed against the central and southern fronts.

The remnants of the trapped forces in The Don pocket ( 6th Guards, 13th and 18th Army's ) are destroyed freeing up 4th Pz Armee and Hausser's SS Panzer troops, however the renewed enemy operations have put a substantial strain on manpower and resources on AG South, having to deal with Soviet attacks and then eliminating the pocket may put the 1944 spring offensive operation back even further as Woehler now needs to replenish his Army Group with supplies, munitions, replacements and repair damaged equipment and fighting vehicles.
And fresh Red Army units are reportedly already advancing from the Stalingrad area to reinforce enemy units stationed in forward positions along the front line.

Soviet Saransk Offensive
Late in the second week of May the 1st Belorussian and 3rd Baltic Fronts have struck 4th Armee under cover of bad weather, in the North Soviet armour crossed the Alatyr river smashing through Axis defensive positions forcing back parts of the 211th Inf Division.
Soviet armour pushed through and opened a gap between XLIII ArmeeKorps and IX ArmeeKorps, 23rd Inf Div is isolated as 8th Guards and 51st Army's backed by 4th Tank Army then turned South after crossing the Insar river.
Further North Red Army troops launched attacks against LVI Pz Korps to tie down the mobile reserve which was stationed there in case of a enemy push towards Gorky.
General Heinrici ( 4th Armee ) aware of the enemy buildup had deployed the 19th Panzer Division to counter the enemy armour but the rapid redeploying of enemy units South to attack Saransk was not expected.
South of Saransk 3rd Baltic Front's 48th, 56th, 57th, 59th, 67th and 2nd Shock Armies punched through opening a corridor and capturing Ruzaevka, Soviet armour then turned North linking up with 1st Belorussian Front cutting off IX ArmeeKorps ( 23rd, 52nd, 208th, 267th Inf Div's and 18th Panzer Division ) although IX Armeekorps is cutoff Saransk remains under Axis control and is well supplied, Hans Schmidt's men are ordered to fortify there positions and wait for the relief columns to arrive.

Soviet 2nd Donbas Offensive
Taking Axis forces by surprise the Soviets begin a second offensive towards The Donets Basin, front line reports indicated the enemy had exhausted its men and armour in the last effort to capture The Donbas however The Red Army once again shows its resilience.
2nd Ukrainian Front attacks on a 50 mile front, Bondarev ( 18th ), Filippovsky ( 28th ), Chibisov ( 38th ), Vostrukhov ( 48th ) and Bogdanov ( 2nd Shock ) supported by 8th Air Army ( Kamanin ) smash through the line South of Yefremovo- Stepanov, Rum IV and VI Korps along with the XXIX and XXXXII ArmeeKorps which had already been hit hard from previous actions where pushed aside as Soviet Tank and Mech units pushed through capturing Tatsinskaya and Belaya Kalitva.
Red Army units from 28th Army, 38th Army and 2nd Shock Army crossed the Donets river and almost captured the town of Kamensk but were held by Rumanian troops from Rum VI Korps.
As Axis forces regroup more enemy troops begin pushing down through The Rostov region, Inf from Soviet 9th Army and Mech and heavy Artillery formations from 1st Guards Tank Army, the timing of the attack was well planned with Hausser's Panzer troops leaving the area the previous day.

With IX ArmeeKorps is once again cutoff and pushed back into a smaller defensible area the enemy is now in a position to destroy the unit and achieve a major breakthrough however Soviet armoured forces suddenly disengage and begin to redeploy South leaving only Infantry units encircled around our forces.
Reports indicate the withdrawal of enemy armour is due to our own offensives in the central sector where enemy forces are thin on the ground.
