What's with the 'Total Aircraft' column? Surely this duplicates the aviation support needed figure? Or have I missed something?

Well it may not always be the same... isn't there still the max 250 Aviation support points cap?

The 'Total Aircraft' column is the total number of aircraft currently at the base. The Aviation Support is the number of aircraft that can be supported by available personnel. Once you reach 250 Aviation Support, you can support any number of aircraft. Keep in mind that the size of the airfield will also play a part. Size 1 supports 50 aircraft, size 2 100 etc…

Aircraft operating from base that do not have enough aviation support and airfields that are too small will take more operational damage and take longer to repair.

Edit - I did not read your question correctly. The answer to your question is support required will max out at 250.
