Khrushchev's War, Day 1 - Poseidon's Play, 1957 -- new beta for testing

Post by Mgellis »

A new beta for testing...this is a small scenario in the Khrushchev's War set. A single Greek submarine must intercept a Soviet convoy.

As always, please let me know what you think. Is there anything involving the sides, units involved, gameplay, enemy strategy, events, orders, etc. that can be improved, or needs correction, etc.? What can I do to make the scenario more fun and more challenging.

Thanks in advance!

Neat! Didn't expect the second entry to be this soon!

Those Soviet diesel boats gave me a headache in the last scenario, now we will see if I can do well from the other side!

Completed my first attempt at this. Got a triumph score of 600.

Naturally a slow buildup, as I simply have to make my best guess on the path of the Convoy and position myself along that path.

Once darkness fell, I went to periscope depth to charge batteries and watch for the convoy with the periscope. I did spot an Egyptian destroyer but was able to avoid detection.

A little after midnight zulu time, I picked up the emissions from a Soviet frigate bearing down fast on me. So I went deep, just over the layer, and started picking up sounds of what could only be the convoy. As they seemed close I took a risk and went to periscope depth.

To my shock, I poked my scope up WITHIN the convoy! Two of it's three escorts were facing away from me and I had clear bearings on most of the merchants. Naturally I seized the moment and started my attack. This was about 25-30 NM east of Marsa Matruh.

I engaged the two escorts first with Mk35s and Mk 14s. Both are hit and crippled. I later get a close brush with the third escort but I was able to put a Mk 35 into it at close range. I seemed to have caught them with their pants down as they didn't get a shot off at me.

While engaging that last frigate, an enemy helicopter drops a pair of depth charges on me and I take damage, losing one torpedo tube (and the Mk14 stuck inside it). I had left my radar on too long after starting the engagement. Nonetheless, I keep engaging.

I ultimately sank all 3 escorts and 3x cargo ships with 7x Mk 14s and all 8x Mk 35s. I did consider surfacing and going after the surviving merchants with my deck gun, but I considered the air threat too great, so I went below the layer and escaped the area to the north.

Glory to the Hellenic Navy!

No real notes to add I think. It's a simple scenario that functions as intended as far as I can tell.

Thanks. I'll wait a couple of days and see if anyone else have any comments or suggestions. If not, I'll post it to the Community Scenario Pack.
