Looking for the Matrix Version Advanced Squad Leader game

Post by kaybayray »

Greetings All <S>

I have several Matrix games and love them all. I am an old school strategy board gamer from way back when. I still have my ASL and the original Squad Leader, Panzer Leader games. I am looking specifically for the Matrix Games version of the closest thing they have to Advanced Squad Leader. I have the Tigers on the Hunt which is awesome but it has limited nationalities that can be played. I also have the Steel Panthers Generals Edition but it is not the ASL type game I am seeking. I am looking for the game that has most or all of the major WWII Nationalities represented. I am sure that Matrix must have what I am looking for I just have not found it yet. If anybody can point me to the game I am looking for I would be very grateful.

Thank You for any and all replies.

The game that is close to ASL from Matrix Games is one you already mentioned (Tigers on the Hunt).

Another alternative is Microproses Second Front.

But there is no other game that is even close to ASL, nor is there any computer game (to date) that even matches ASL no matter how much they try.

Well, what about Combat Mission?

What about Combat Mission?

As far as I know CM is not like ASL, CM is a real time game engine with a lot of 3D support. ASL is basically a 2D board wargame giving you a top down look as you play. So you can't really compare that.

Now with that said Second Front is both a 2D and a 3D engine and its built entirely of ASL rules. I am not much for 3D games but I do make exception for SF since its very easy to zoom from top down to various 3D views.

Last time I played CM was 20 years ago and from my perspective CM and Close Combat are both "first person like shooter" games and I am just not into those types of games.

TOTH, SF, and Steel Panthers are more to my liking.

But YMMV

For me it's Valor & Victory (which even has Pacific DLC now).
At least it has a snazzy interface, I cannot bear the Tigers on the Hunt one.
A lot of mechanics get added after the base game in DLCs which some don't realize.
It has a couple of quirks different than SL/ASL that changes the strategies and tactics a bit.
It isn't for everyone but not a single game is.
For me Valor & Victory has everything I was looking for in a SL/ASL replacement.

I feel an urge to interject. Another legendary board war game, BattleTech, has got a few faithful video game adaptations. So far the best one is MegaMek. Another is Titans of Steel: Warring Suns, which was available here on the Matrix site for a time but doesn't seem to be anymore. Both games are (should be?) available for free.
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.
