"Other" category for VP losses

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

"Other" category for VP losses

Post by HansBolter »

So on the turn that I execute a successful invasion of France, instead of being rewarded for it, I get penalized.

I went 47 VPs in the hole on the turn of the invasion.

29 of those points are in the undefined "Other" category.
As can be see from the screen shot the "Other" category is responsible for the most VP losses of any category.

How is a player supposed to know what to do to counter this when it remains undefined?

Why are players penalized, instead of being rewarded for executing a successful invasion?

I'm seriously wondering of there is any functional grey matter at all between the ears of the people who designed this piece of garbage.

I agree. An often-inscrutable sphinx of a game and the community support seems to be checked out these days.

I already answered your question on your other thread but apparently you missed it so I'm putting it here:

Western Allies Casualty Negative VP
The Allied player loses VPs for men killed or wounded as follows:
US killed/captured/disabled: – 1 VP per 1000
Other (non-US) killed/captured/disabled: – 1 VP per 667

Are not all of those listed by you categorized as Losses and listed in the Losses category?

What does that have to do with the mysterious Other category?

that cat is not mysterious, every friendly/allied non-US loss counts there. So British, Commonwealth, Free French, Brazilian and WA Italian losses count there. I believe pilot losses count as well.

And the fact that the only way any of those "others" were capable of participating was because they were provided with US equipment means that losses incurred by them ARE US losses.

Can you explain why only the Allied side is penalized for incurring losses?

The common expectation of any wargamer is that if one is going to be penalized for incurring losses one should also be rewarded for inflicting losses.

The means of winning a war is destroying the enemy army, yet the Allies are rewarded only for taking terrain and destroying factories. The strategic air offensive did not win the war. Taking Berlin didn't win the war for the Western Allies because they never took it.
