Interesting video about AWACS

It seems like the Soviet/Russian AWACS aircraft were at quite a disadvantage compared to contemporary NATO aircraft. Is this modeled at all in CMO?

While an interesting video, I think that was pretty well known.

In game you can just look at the database. E-3 is significantly longer ranged radar and has a faster OODA all around than an A-50.

You can compare the sensors and other properties in the DB viewer and see for yourself. This is why we made the DB viewer multi-window capable :)

Yeah, I know about the range from the DB.

So does OODA impact non-firing units as well? I thought it only impacted units attacking/defending

I am pretty sure OODA has some impact on ID'ing and determining hostile or not. But definitively not sure.

I have attached a quick test to compare the two platforms overall performance with a 2000s or so timeframe. One thing to keep in mind is can't just look at the aircraft. You have to look at the radar capabilities as well.

Thanks.

Based on your scenario, I did a little more testing and this seems to make sense based on the video and generations of the technology involved.

Mig-21 flying at 45,000 feet
AWACS flying at 36,000 feet

E-3B - Detected at 298nm, Classified at 216nm via NCTR mode (+10 seconds), Identified at 216nm via NCTR mode (+ 5 minutes, 10 seconds)
A-50E - Detected at 200nnm, CLassified at 199nm via NCTR mode (+5 seconds) identified at 175nm via NCTR mode (+ 1 minute, 45 seconds)
A-50A - Detected at 201nm- Not identified
Tu-126- Detected at 181nm - Not identified

While my scenario shows the differences in AWACS, it doesn't really validate the OODA aspect. You would have to build a more complex test.

Proficiency would be one way to test it. Use the same AWACS but with varying proficiency.

OODA impacts detection but AFIK not classification or ID.

You can change the OODA values of an unit using lua.

Code: Select all

local unit = SE_GetUnit({guid='myunitguid'})
unit.OODA = {detection = 9000, targeting=10, evasion=5}

Is it OODA by itself or is proficiency a factor?

Proficiency is reflected in OODA values. Setting different levels of proficiency changes the OODA values.
