Some Quick Observations

Post by blackcloud6 »

I just downloaded the game and played the first tutorial to see how it plays and looks great.

It looks great and seems it will be a seamless transition from AB I.

Some things to consider: (if there is a way to do these, please let me know.

Allow making the font larger. I have this running on a 50-inch TV and the font is hard to read at that scaling.

Multiple monitor support. I'm running this right now from a lap-top connected to the TV. The laptop's monitor is set to be next to the bottom of the monitor, so it is very hard to have the mouse do the map when at the bottom of the monitor the game is showing on.

Make a hot key to immediately put you on the top-down map. I noticed this immediately as I want to go to the top-down view quickly to see the over-all battlefield picture and give orders. Having to manipulate the camera to do so takes too long. And maybe, if possible then allow that hot key to toggle you back to previous view.

Have you increased the preferred UI scale in the settings launcher?

I don't quite understand this. How should the game window be different from what it is now?

I didn't have AB 1, so this is all new to me, but after an hour of playing what I'd most like to see if zoom to cursor. There are other aspects of navigating around the map that are a bit cumbersome, but zoom to cursor would really help out a lot.

Really enjoying the game so far though. It reminds me of a very old game by SSI called Combat Leader, except this is 3d and better is just about every way... well perhaps except one, in Combat Leader you could take command of one HQ and just control its subordinate units and let the AI take over the main force. That was incredibly fun. It would be great if you could do that in ABII... (but add the zoom to mouse cursor first)

It is there in some form, if you keep the view in the top-down position. At the moment it's not quite as slick as in AB1.

If the friendly side is scripted then the player can have a control of a few selected units.

Thanks for the answers. As to multiple monitors, the cursor does not stop at the edge of the monitor the game is on where the next monitor is set to be 'connected," the cursor just moves on to the next monitor and thus edge map scrolling does not work unless you precisely stop moving the mouse at the edge of the first monitor. This is problem in almost all games when you have more than one monitor, so I don't know if there is a solution.

I'll look at the UI Scaling setting and see if I can figure that out.

UI Scaling worked. The first time I booted up the game I missed it because I was too far away from the TV and couldn't read it.

It may be possible to make the game window 'capture' the mouse cursor. If there's enough demand for it I can investigate if it's doable.

Thanks for looking into this. This has bugged me in many games.

I just played a quick made-up scenario. The game works great and looks good. It will take a bit to get used to the 3D and camera controls since I've play much of AB I. The click the compass to zoom out to the top-down map is just what I felt was needed... and is crucial in the fight.

If possible, I'd like a keyboard key that could be held instead of middle-click to rotate the camera. This would make it possible to play using a trackpad. Graviteam Tactics for example uses C in this way, but of course that's already used. Maybe Z?

It would also be great to have a keyboard key that centres and zooms to the selected unit.
Also, a keypress that recentres the map on the top down view (same function as clicking on compass).
And also if a unit is selected in the camera view, can clicking next and previous centre on the next unit while maintaining whatever level of zoom is currently being used? This would enable us to navigate around the map faster.

And another quick request before I turn in for the night.

Would it be possible to have trees go see-through when zoomed in close as currently it's really difficult to see units in trees.

I've played for probably about 3 hours tonight and thoroughly enjoyed the game. So much is really well thought out. The 3d maps are lovely, sound effects great... I love the idea of the large maps and campaigns being played across them and being able to pick smaller sections. It's really easy to set up user generated scenarios as well which is a great feature and I prefer games where you give orders to HQs as it just seems more realistic and less micro-management. And I haven't played a game with a orders delay since Conquest of the Aegean!

I can see myself spending hours and hours on this and really looking forward to learning and playing more. Congrats to the dev, clearly a lot of love gone into this.

A hotkey toggle for trees would be nice, or the option to not render them at close range.

The ability to rebind keyboard commands and (especially) a few different options as to mouse camera control would be a huge improvement. (Combat Mission handles this wonderfully, with 3 very different default mouse control styles.) The default camera controls in AB2 are very different from any of the other 3D wargames I play.

Overall this appears to be a great game that I can see myself spending lots of time with. Wonderful work! And congrats on a successful launch.
