New strategies

Post by Pack Rat »

I started playing this "new kid on the block" thinking my old strategies would be more than sufficient to get by with, wrong.
Well pretty wrong anyway, still some basic ideas that carry the day most of the time. So I'm interested in any neat little tricks you all might have stumbled across. Here's one I use.

When playing with full ammo off (which I prefer to) ammo trucks and dumps can make a big differance in the out come. The battles can be longer so ammo is more of a concern. With artillery I nest them around a truck or dump againest the AI, with a human player I keep a truck or dump within one or two moves for secondary fire positions. Oh and popping smoke in the backfield is fun,can confuse the oppentants idea of where your arty is Image When up againest superior tanks try to keep yours around dumps or carriers as long as you can to get those special rounds. I try to keep a group loading, that has good speed and firepower and can be tossed into the fray at the right time. The AI never has used ammo trucks or dumps right even when it had them. Good to know if you have the better tanks, because the AI side will be low on the HEAT and APCR if it has it at all.

We know how risky it can be to get that rear or side shot so having the round to do the job, to start with, can send them back to their homeland in a hurry.

Yo Pack Rat,
There is an SP Primer put out by Todd Brady, in the Steel Panthers Arsenal on the TGN page. Perhaps someone can do an update with the new SPWAW. Just a thought.
BTW, I used that smoke in the back strategy myself. Another one I liked was when I attack, to use my opening bombardment to drop smoke in the area that looked like most obvious route to victory hexes. Then I would launch a few recon AFVs through the smoke, while my main attack inched along the other route. Once my recon detected his forces shifting, I would then strike into the flanks or rear. Best time I had was when I got a guy to turn his 2 pltns of Panthers to face the smoke. I popped up behind him from 2-3 hexes away with my t34s and took 7 of them out. He was PISSED!
Of course there is the time I got my butt handed to me by a guy I thought I had beat. Traditional tactic having wiped out most of his tanks in a gruesome battle, I still had 5 widely spread out T34s and several men. Instead of consolidating the tanks, I set them off in a wide front. He had one PzIV and a few engineers in ht's. I thought he had an ARMY! He did guerilla tactics, hitting a tank and infantry then retreating, doubling back, hit another area, retreat, swing around, hit again. At the end of the battle he showed me what he had left(we took pix) and all he had was the 3 engrs, 4 hts, and 1 damaged pzIV, with which he wiped out 5 t34s, 3hts, and about 8 pltns of infantry. I was astounded and embarrassed. Since then, I've never used wide front approach again.

Best Regards,
