"Truncated lists" issues

Post by hurkle »

"...fixed very long lists sometimes being truncated, e.g. Ship Designs list"
From the patch notes.

Does this also include other long lists that are always truncated when they should not be? If not this needs to happen at some point and these low caps need raised a lot.

The reason I mention this is that the long lists that are truncated are a real pain in the bottom for players playing in the very large universes. Some very low sized capped lists you can partially get around by using sort options and some by more creative thinking but some capped size lists are a lot more tricky to see more of the list than the game allows right now.

Examples would be player combat ships, I use idle ships most often so will focus on this list, or the very low one hundred locations for new spaceports shown in the new spaceport list. The reality is that most of the capped/truncated lists players can see are far too low for players playing on one thousand plus systems who will have a lot more ships and planets and more everything so these players will always get annoyed at not being able to see all their stuff in a single list.

I currently have nine hundred and thirty five potential new spaceport locations and can see one hundred of them in the current one hundred cap new spaceport list when sorting by priority. Sorting by distance and then choosing a planet at empire centre and a planet at all four of the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west) I can see up to five hundred planets of those nine hundred and thirty five potential locations for spaceports. The other four hundred and thirty five planets are essentially invisible to me on that list and I have no idea if I can build a spaceport at any of these. I like spaceports and want to build more of them. Make it so I can! :)

We really need new spaceport sort options to make building new spaceports easy, it would be very useful to have an option to show only places that can currently have spaceports built there. I dont need to see high hundreds of places that I cant build spaceports at and it wastes time having to click on a planet to north, south, east, west, and at the centre of my controlled space then scrolling down a list of a hundred locations five times at a dozen planets at a time to try to see which of my nine hundred and thirty five colonies without spaceports can build one, sorry which of the five hundred colonies can build a spaceport as that is all I can see.

On player ships list, it is annoying when the idle combat ships list is over half filled with ships in refitting fleets that have finished their refit, ships being repaired, ships being built like carriers and battleships, and the most annoying is the high hundreds of idle fuel tankers. Some kind of options to remove these would be great and being able to see ready to be deployed actual combat ships, meaning manual ships that are not being repaired or built and with no fuel tankers in the list would be ideal. I would love to know precisely how many of my three thousand idle ships can be sent to fight right this minute if war starts.

Imagine you have three thousand idle ships and five hundred of them are in fleets refitting and a thousand are the completely useless fuel tankers then you sort by strength and get all the fleets refitting when sorting for strongest and you get all fuel tankers and captured escorts and ships being repaired that cant move and a few ships being built when sorting for weakest. You just dont see any combat ships that are unfleeted and ready to go with these sort options and the low cap size of the list. We need to be able to see all ships and need to be able to filter out fuel tankers as that would be about eighty pages of fuel tankers I dont need to scroll through if fuel tankers could be removed or filtered out.

(For anyone wondering why I have so many idle ships I play with as little automation as possible and I like to send half a dozen closest ships to threats as they appear in notifications and in wars can immediately send slightly larger groups to all enemy systems to disrupt them and this works significantly better than waiting years for fleets to go to threats and you really need to deploy fleets much more quickly now than the AI deploys your fleets to kill the new space monsters in your space so manual is a lot better for fleets too.)

I am not sure how many of the three thousand idle ships the game says it is showing that this list sorted by strongest actually shows, think it is five hundred actually shown? I do know that all the escorts, frigates, and most destroyers are missing, as are ships under construction/repair, and all the captured ships and discovered ships are missing and it is mostly ships in refitting fleets that I see in strongest; even when I sort by both lowest strength and highest strength there are still about two thousand ships missing from the list that I would never see if I did not manually move fleets and manually refuel tankers and sort by strongest, weakest, distance. Having to do this is irritating and a waste of time.

I tried to bypass this issue of irritating numbers of fuel tankers by making one massive fleet of fuel tankers, to easily be able to remove the useless fuel tankers from the list of idle ships with a single click on refuel, and it breaks the fleet at some not very large number (like 200 or 255?). All the fuel tankers are still fleeted but dont show in the broken fleet as the broken fleet has about nine hundred fuel tankers in it but only shows twelve of them in the fleet graphic that appears in bottom left of screen when you click on fleet so you might want to take a look at maximum fleet size to code either fix it to correctly allow unlimited ships or put a hard limit on fleet sizes.

Was laughing there thinking that this massive fleet size breaking fleets has to have been bug reported before. I cant be the first person to have fleeted up hundreds of ships can I? If someone did report it years ago then this is still not fixed.

The other close to nine hundred fuel tankers in the broken fuel tanker fleet are still in the fleet, they all still say in 26th fleet, but any fleet action like mass refuelling them all does nothing and they just sit there while the twelve ships in the fleet graphic do move like a normal fleet. Reproduce this in any game quickly by simply using the editor to add five hundred identical combat ships, fleet up two hundred of them then add a dozen more ships at a time, unpause, wait a few seconds, pause and then add some more, until it breaks the fleet.

As an add to that last paragraph, the reason for the game building nine hundred fuel tankers for my empire escapes me and game still wants to build more even though 99% of those ships do nothing 99% of the time. The reason I fleeted most of the fuel tankers was simply because selecting nine hundred ships in the idle ships list takes forever to do and then sending them to refuel just to clear some space in the idle ships list for the ships I actually want to see is even more time wasted and you need to do refuel/refit loads of ships in big games every time you want to see more of your idle combat ships which becomes annoying very quickly.

One final point on fleets, dont know if it was ever fixed but the fleets list itself was capped at fifty fleets and, like most of these low number caps, is annoying for people playing bigger universes. I could easily field three hundred fleets of eight to sixteen ships but if the fleet limit is still capped at fifty I could see fifty strongest and fifty weakest but those other two hundred fleets would be effectively invisible to me in fleets list so cap needs raised here too.

Do you have a save and screenshots pointing out your specific issues with truncated lists?
