Does the number of sides affect game speed?

Post by AdmiralSteve »

I've built a scenario with 22 sides to simulate an IADS as well as attempting to script different reactions from the different sides. With 500 units, multiple patrol zones, sonobuoys and multiple events with lua scripts, the scenario is getting a bit sluggish. Since the function of the scenario works for my idea but the lagging performance does not, I was hoping that combining sides would help bring down the pulse time. Would adjusting the video card settings help too? Any thoughts on this?

My experience is number of sides has minimal impact. Most I ever had was 15. But a lot of no nav zones driven by numerous sides does slow things done because of the stress on pathfinding. Especially true it seems if there are a lot of complex shapes for zones. Thats just my experience...

edit...my first guess beyond the above is lua scripts stressing the cycles if they run continuously.

As I recall, nav zones, patrol zones, etc were more taxing than just a predetermined course? Is that your take?

Can we get a copy of the scenario, even draft? Thanks.

I have no hard proof other than a lot of hours in the game, but here's what I've noticed affecting game speed:

1) # of units in the game
2) # artillery/rocket rounds in the air
3) various game settings - weapon range rings, etc

I don't know if GPUs are nearly as important as CPUs in this game.

As per your request.

It runs on single flame well for about 20-22 minutes, bogs down for 30 minutes of game time then seems to be fine after that so I cant seem to really pinpoint what's happening so early into the scenario that slows it down. Thanks to all who added input and Merry Christmas to each and every one of the CMO Team.
