[FIXED + USER ERROR] 1500 - Units on CAP Changing (Player) Assigned Course

Post by TempestII »

I'm sure this didn't used to happen, but it certainly seems to be happening in Build 1500. Right at the end of the linked video clip, you'll notice Flight 745 will change its Player assigned course to a different one. I've noticed it happening multiple times and I've also attached a Save. In my eyes, this isn't working as designed as "Ignore plotted course when attacking" is set to "No". If it was set to "Yes", I'd understand it.

I'm not sure if this is also happening on other Missions like ASuWs and ASWs at this time.

Thanks, I remember it happening a few builds back, but was much worse then. This is still annoying, but not as noticeable, so I assumed it was thought to be fixed.

What is the problem here? The CAP aircraft appear to behaving as expected. They follow the unfriendly contact in their patrol zone until it leaves, then they go back to patrolling. When the unfriendly contact re-enters their patrol area they go back to shadowing it.

I just watch the video again, and realize the first half of me trying to show the doctrine screen isnt in the recording. 🤦 Although it is the same as my first video which shows the doctrine screen.

So basically my problem is some unit couldn't commit on the engagement and will go back and forth to attacks then back to station then attack again. You can see this behavior with first flight to engaged, Viking 11. And it happen again with Farmer 25, then Jackal 62. And my second problem is with how the sim decide which unit to engage, sometime it will pick the unit further away to the target when there are other unit closer.
And also my last problem, which didn't happened in the previous version of the same test. Is with the number of unit for engagement, I have set it to 1 flight but for some reason it keep sending 2 flight to engage.

All these isn't too much of a problem on its own, but in a longer game, it will cause problems with fuel management, and target leak through the defence.

Looked at this now.

This is a combination of a code issue and doctrine settings issue. Using the 2-AC group Flight 745 as reference.

1) The group targets an enemy Su-57 and, in the process, clears its plotted course. Given that the group's "Ignore Plotted Course [When Attacking]" (IPC) doctrine setting is "No", they should respect this and stick to their course. Added this to the AI code as an extra clause.

2) Despite the addition of this extra clause, the group kept clearing its course and aggressively maneuvering to attack. This took some more digging to clarify.
What happened was that, even while the group's IPC was No, the GROUP LEAD'S IPC was Yes. So the group lead was now targeting the enemy Su-57, and in the process cleared the plotted course, and since the group's plotted course is the group lead's plotted course, the group had its course cleared.
Resetting the member's IPC doctrine to align with the group's IPC (ie. "No") led to the group correctly respecting its plotted course.

Moral of the story. Be careful with doctrine settings.
