Flight Formations working or not?

Post by Knightpawn »

Question: Is it my idea that one cannot assign a formation to a group of airplanes? (for example from column, to wedge, to line etc). It does not seem to work when in flight, in contrast to naval groups where it works fine.

By design it does: https://command.matrixgames.com/?p=4990 (paragraph "Stay in formation")

If you have come across a case where this does not happen, please submit a save for investigation.

1527 build

I have noted this before in a lot of scenarios. If the flight stays relatively on a straight course, the formation holds. But any turn tighter than 10-15 deg. and the formation starts to come apart.

First pic is right after hitting start on a echelon right formation and a 30 deg (approx.) turn.

Second pic right after a 35 deg turn (approx.) and 15nm after first turn.

Third pic 20 nm after 3rd 30 deg turn.

This is actually better than usual. Only the fourth plane is completely out of position. No matter how long the straight last leg is, that plane will always be far out of position. The other two wingmen will all remain slightly out of position, but closer. Frankly, its always seemed to be like that.

I've noticed that aircraft do not obey formation orders when on a land strike mission, but they do to some extend when on manual plotted course, if that helps anyone.
The boogabooga doctrine for CMO: Any intentional human intervention needs to be able to completely and reliably over-ride anything that the AI is doing at any time.

This is a consequence of some of the major fixes that were applied to strike missions to get them back to a workable state earlier IIRC. As we continue to revamp/improve strike missions this will get looked at
