Italian units joing the Allies

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

Italian units joing the Allies

Post by El_Condoro »

:?: I didn't think that the opposing side could purchase units from a surrendered major. My Italians surrendered (Citadel 43) and now my Allied opponent has a bunch of Italian units fighting against me. All good if it's intended but I have not seen that before.

Italy switched sides in real life, so it is intended that they can deploy units on the Allied side.

In game engine terms, here Italy is surrendering to Germany which makes it switch sides, which is different to when other Majors surrender. It's a clever trick Hubert introduced some years ago. ;)

Slight edit as it doesn't surrender to itself, though that is also a possibility in order to make a country switch sides!

The Italians actually declared war on Germany, it's true, but they didn't field organised units to fight outside Italy. There were effective large-scale partisan activities, especially in the north, and terrible reprisals from the Germans.

What happens in game terms is that the US can spend its MPPs to build Italian units, instead of waiting to transport US units across the Atlantic. This does not seem historical (I know that word is subjective) to me.

And, just so that I am clear in case this feature can be used in Orb & Crown, the surrender of Italy is handled in the game engine and is not a script? If so, does that mean #COUNTRY_ID= 59 always act this way - surrendering to itself and its units available to purchase by the conquerer?

This isn't the case though.

It would be the case if Italy were a Minor, but Italy is a Major, so it has to buy its own units and the US cannot fund them, as there is no convoy from the USA to Italy.

There is nothing unique to the country id, it is totally scripted, whereby Italy surrenders to Germany, which makes it switch sides (it can also be set to surrender to itself) and so any country can do this. You'll find a number of examples in the Surrender_2 file, not just of Italy but also some of the Balkan countries and Finland.

So yes, you can use it in Orb & Crown! :)
