We get the odd inquiry on the forum about a long-anticipated mirage called Steel Tigers. That's about it.

No, not really. Those that still play SP have migrated to Shrapnel's SPWW2 or SPMBT, the only two version of SP that has been actively updated, patched and fixed for the last 20+ years and the only versions that work on modern PCs.

SPWAW does not work on Windows 10 or 11 without some black magic hat tricks.

SPWW2 works with Windows 10 and 11 with no problems.

Plus the SPWAW community has disappeared, several have died and others have moved on to other things. The Shrapnel community is still alive but not as active as it once was.

YMMV

Wow, blast from the past!

The Depot was shut down some years ago and I *think* Bernie passed away? The free forum site that it was resurrected at is overrun with ads and there's virtually no activity there either.

I'd pay seriously good money for Steel Tigers, as would most of us, but that seems to be a complete flop ten years on from its announcement.

I was using those black magic tricks to play SP but still ran into issues, the most irritating of which was campaign scenarios crashing halfway through the campaign.

I can't say much, as I started a lot of SP projects in my youth that were never fully developed. I did release a complete US Civil War mod for WinSPWW2 about ten years ago, and there was talk from those developers about making an 'official' 19th century mod from them using my base mod but nothing came of that.

I think it was Major Mess who made a fan patch for SPWAW. Does it have anything to improve compatibility with Win 10/11?

Been years since I last played the game. I got WinXP desktop on the floor if I ever care to play it again. Some cool scenarios which likely aren't all remade for WinSPWW2.
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Hi V2!

Sigh .......

This will probably get me banned, what what the hell.

This Zovs character is nothing more than a shill for Shrapnel.
He has no idea what he is talking about.
He tried to run SPWaW on a Mac using an emulator. Quelle surprise when that doesn't work right.

The game works fine in Win 10 and Win 11.

Sadly though, partly due to efforts from people like "Zovs" and that JustaToy clown .............. the game is dead.

It isn't one or two people that killed the game. It's a lack of support from Slitherine/Matrix. To lay it on one or two people is so very wrong not to mention an untruth. SPWW2 is well supported and patched. SpWaW isn't. And there is the truth of the matter. But as long as people play a game is it really dead or did you just stop caring about playing it?

Don't make uncalled for personal attacks like this on our forums. If you think it'll get you banned, perhaps that's a sure sign you shouldn't be saying it.

Ha ha ha,
I shall abide.

My snarky personal comments were not warranted, and I apologize for that.

I am still somewhat confused as to why someone on this board is allowed to promote other companies products so blatantly, but I'll let go of that too. It ain't my forum.

Peace

i own all the steel panthers games and
for different reasons i prefer spwaw with the latest patch
than spww2. i see 2 problems with spww2, recurent latency and infantry that resists a little too hard.
i introduced the spwaw matrix campaigns in the ultimate free version and it's the best.

Hi Major! I've been away a loooong while now, but I really appreciate your steadfast support of SPWAW! It's a game that brought me into computer wargaming 20+ years ago from a demo disc in a magazine ... Like many others, I am waiting for Steel Tigers or whatever ... cheers Mess!

(P.S. Viking, I remember losing to you a lot in PBEM)

Hey Mess, happily I'm still above ground! New career, new family, new town ... I have more time for hobbies in the summer, who says an old dog can't learn new tricks! :D

Ya know, at this point I would be perfectly happy with Matrix simply picking back up where they left off in supporting SP:WaW. And I'd gladly pay good money for it, too. I'd also be happy with an updated color palette for the icons. I don't necessarily need 3D graphics.. there was nothing wrong with the old girl. New Mega Campaigns.. gladly pay for those also.

Ah well. That's just me.

No. Not just you. There are at least one more that would like that, and pay for that.

Has anyone ever got to the bottom of the lack of SP4/Steel Tigers?

It seems like such an obvious open goal that would get so many of us back together...

From July 2022, nearly three years ago -

"We are genuinely sorry that development has stalled on Steel Tigers. As was said it was put on hold, and we have no yet restarted active development on it. We will keep you informed of progress when it restarts. It is definitely something we have a lot of enthusiasm for, but it does need us to have the right team in place to execute it."

And nothing since, that I'm aware of at least.

Sorry but I run SPWAW using an emulator, ie Parallels running XP and it works fine. The screen is small but a little change to resolution fixes that.
