[Q] Standardisation US Navy/NATO Ship Fuel

Post by FifthDomain »

Good Evening

Quick question on changing the fuel type of the US Navy vessels, currently they are using Gas fuel, Diesel and Oil. From what i can gather they were standardised in 1970 to run on F76 diesel same as other NATO nations, currently if you want a NATO naval task force only America can refuel multiple American ships apart from the UK which seems to have a ship that can refuel American Ships but not British ships.

I asked the question on the Github but got no reply so asking here as well. I just wanted to know if a database request was the correct way to ask for that change (i have submitted that request, currently on page 5) or if the request should be made here in tech support. If it is DB request do i need to note each individual ship for changing and its changes or can it be done globally. I am willing to go through all NATO ships in DB3K and make a list of changes if it will help.

"This fuel has been standardized with the NATO allies as NATO F-76. It is used for powering all non nuclear ships, with JP-5 considered to be an acceptable alternative." [1]

"In the early 1970's, the U.S. Navy switched from use of Navy Special Fuel Oil (NSFO NATO F-77 to Naval Distillate Fuel NATO F-76) in shipboard propulsion and electric generating systems. Presently there are two fuels being utilized in shipboard operations. NDF (F-76) is utilized in propulsion and electric generating
systems, and JP-5 jet fuel is used for aircraft operations and as an emergency fuel for systems utilizing F-76" [1]

Following up on this topic. I was trying to do a speed run with a CVN centered CVBG, and I couldn't figure out why the turbine powered escorts couldn't refuel under way from the carrier. I think this should be fixed as well. Database platforms with engine type = Gas Turbine should be able to run off "Aviation Fuel" in order to allow refueling from the carrier. Not sure if this would break anything with old scenarios though?

They should actually run on marine diesel and be able to use aviation fuel as well in emergencies. All NATO warships use the same fuel, but for some reason the US ships are using a Gas Fuel tag meaning mixed NATO task forces can't refuel from the same vessel.

I'd definitely like to see duel fuel use of both Diesel and Aviation Fuel but i suspect thats alot more complex than just changing the fuel type flag of US vessels to Diesel from Gas Fuel.

In fact allowing Diesel to fuel Gas Fuel and vise versa would save changing the database at all, i might make a feature request for that if i've not done it already.

This is a database issue and should be reported on the DB GitHub tracker.

Thanks for the reply Kushan, i have made a request over there but will add my additional suggestion of allowing the fuels to be interchangeable in case it makes it easier.
