MAP SCALE

Post by Camstick »

I am developing a modern scenario using the map in Call to Arms. It looks like the hexs are 10 kms. Is is possible to change that so that the nexs represent 5 kms? In other words, can I just add more hexs to the same map?

It's not clear what you're asking. Clarify?

Yes maybe that wasn't so clear.

I am developing a new Call to Arms scenario, this one to be called Call to Arms 2025; so this will be the US invasion of Canada based on President-elect T's recent statements about Canada becoming the 51st State. Should be fun.

So I have started with the original Call to Arms map. It gives me enough eastern Canada and northern US. When I look at the map and reality, it looks like 1 hex is equal to 10 kms. In other words, the distance between say Kingston and Ottawa is 100 kms in real life and on the Call to Arms map there are 10 hexs between those two cities. I would like there to be 20 hexs, or a scale of 1 hex equals 5 kms. This plays better at the unit level ... you don't have to stack so many units on one hex.

Maybe another question, as I have been amending the map to more modern reality, I need to add bridges. My terrain palette is not offering me bridges. How do I do this?

Thanks in advance

That would require re-drawing the map from scratch at 5km/hex. Much easier to adjust the unit scale (switch from battalions to regiments, etc.).

Note that I have an article on a map making technique I use here:

Wherever a road crosses a river the game effects a bridge. Which means that you can "blow" the road at that point. The exact effect is dependent upon whether New Bridging Rules are opted by the player.

The Call to Arms map was designed specifically for 18th century topography and population. The amount of work to reflect 200 years of human development would probably be more than creating a new one from scratch. There might be other maps out there better suited to your purpose.

As for the scale, be aware that the scenario scale set in the editor may not actually reflect what is drawn on the map. When designing pre-modern scenarios sometimes we have to fiddle with the scale to get it to play correctly.
