Bosnian Crisis 1908

Post by HerrDak »

Greetings.

After learning how to use the editor when creating my first scenario (Third battle of Torreon) I have decided to start a more ambitious project.

It will be based on a "what if scenario" of the Bosnian crisis of 1908. In this scenario Serbia and Montenegro join together to invade Bosnia Herzegovina and Novi Pazar while Austria-Hungary has to defend the region at the same time as defending itself from a general uprising by the Slavic population (uprising of irregulars and guerrillas).

I want to focus the scenario on terrain, distances and supplies, so I opted for a 5km per hex scenario.

At the moment I'm working on the map.

I will continue showing the progress.

Any advice is welcome.

I’m intrigued by your choice of time period and subject. It’s refreshing to see something other than WWII. Good work.
For help with the map, you might take a look in the scenario archive. The scenario Yugoslavia 1941-45 is about 35 years after the war you’re working on but it could help with place names and geography.

Here's the first place I go to for topo maps: https://maps.lib.utexas.edu/maps/topo/f ... ugoslavia/

Nice subject. Good luck.

Hi Dak,

Looks like you're off to a good start by showing the political borders. You could pretty much place the cities by figuring out the scale difference between your source map and the game map.

On supply, my suggestion would be to use new supply rules, but start the scenario with only one unit on each side to deploy. Then check the distro and volume of supply flow to see it matches what you're looking for. Remember railroads will carry supply a long way and could potentially oversupply areas that you want to have sparse supply.

Read up on the attrition divider, it increases or decreases losses in battles. In the year 1908, troops would have been packed together more closely on the battlefield -- losses should tick up, to what degree you will have to decide in terms of what you want to see in the scenario.

If you want to use custom equipment items, you can give me a shout when you do so. I can offer suggestions regarding antipersonnel ratings.

Artillery-- remember in TOAW, guns as equipment in a non-artillery unit are assumed to fire as in the days of Napoleon-- direct fire engagements. Use a unit with an artillery icon if you want your guns to provide indirect fire and reduce enemy entrenchments.

Good luck.

Cheers

I have always been very interested in the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as well as the history of central and eastern Europe.

I decided to address this subject since it seemed like a plausible "what-if" scenario and reasonably manageable in size (I also consider a preventive war against Italy or a confrontation with Russia in Galicia).

Thank you very much for the advice to see the Yugoslavia scenario, I see that it is also 5km per hex.

I'm going to use the map of my first post to place the cities and roads. The only problem is that the map comes in Italian and I have to translate the name of the cities and I have not been able to locate many of them with their original name. Thats a shame.

I will surely be asking you for advice, thank you very much for offering your support.

Hi Dak,

http://igrek.amzp.pl/

Look for the section "mapy austriackie". Old A-H maps there.

Also, wikipedia articles often mention the name changes in their articles about cities.

I am currently working with towns and cities. I have already managed to finish those of the Kingdom of Dalmatia and the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia. (Im using the map of the first post and Google earth).

Later I will work on the roads and railways and then finish with the geographical aspects.

Do you got complex sources for their OOB? or just making up stuff

The idea is to make a realistic OOB. When I finish the map I will look for reliable sources for it.

I already finish south hungary cities and villages.

To give a better visual appeal to the map, I followed these rules to create the human settlements.

Villages: minimal urban graphic in the hex and name with font 3.
Small city: urban graphic covering at least half of the hex and name with font 3.
Large city: urban graphics covering the entire hex and with a normal font.
