Tanks towing ATGs?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Tanks towing ATGs?

Post by Gallo Rojo »

A couple of days ago I was fooling arrownd in a book-store, and I saw a book about WWII Soviet Tanks.
I was amused when I saw the picture of a couple of BT-70 towing ATG guns!
Any one of you know if this was a common practice in the Red Army - and in other armies as well?

I have seen several photos and film strips of Canadian Sherman tanks towing anti-tank guns.
They struggled with a ferocity that was to be expected of brave men fighting with forlorn hope against an enemy who had the advantage of position......knowing that courage was the one thing that would save them.

Considering some tanks were altered to tow other tanks off the battlefield, I would think they would have the hauling capacity to tow the guns. No clue about the popularity of towing a gun though.
A sniper assaults a Sherman tank (going in excess of 15 mph) for 20%. M4 Sherman tank is destroyed.
Is this like when a deer runs out in front of a car? Does the Sherman make some violent turn to avoid the lunatic, only to roll over or hit a tree?

Interesting. Tanks would make pretty good prime movers off the battlefield except the crew would have to ride on the outside.

In battle, it seems awfully impractical.

Maybe the atg's own truck/prime mover/whatever broke down so they had to use whatever was available /tanks)

he he ... that's nice! [:D]

of course you know that in previous SPWaW version (I don't know in the current one) you could load tanks in transport aircrafts.
It was very funny [:D]

I don't know about WWII tanks, but when I was in the Army in the 70's, Tanks had tow hooks. They could tow other tanks, trucks, trailers or whatever would attach to the tow hook.

I've learned over time and through much reading that just about anything is possible in war. That does not mean it is practical or commonplace.

The Russians learned how to adapt and work with what they had. So did other armies. The US soldier was a great improvisor.

The Rag Tag Division (83rd) was quite adept at confiscating German vehicles and using them so they would not have to walk! THat is how they got their name. What a sight! US Army troops riding in Opel trucks and halftracks.

I don't think I would feel comfortable doing that. You never know who might shoot at you!
