French units becoming UK when on Transports

Post by Taxman66 »

Discovered this while playing the TRP mod.
After discussing with Lothos (mod designer), he said the issue is in the game, not the mod.

Anyway:

Figured out my opponent was going 'All France', and delaying taking Paris until after Algeria. I started shipping some French units to North Africa.

He decided to take Paris, and France surrendered. All French land and air units in France surrendered.

However!!!! Land units that were on transports at the time of French surrendered became UK units.

Here is a picture after the transports were landed:

Based on your screenshot, they still are appearing as French units, i.e. it says the unit is the 1st Corps (Elite Inf.) (France).

So I'm not really sure what the issue is here?

They belong to the UK (thus have UK colors) and can be upgraded, repaired by UK MPP, and most importantly will still be around if/when Algeria falls. They won't return to France's possession (and change back to blue and be controlled by France) until after France is liberated. Presuming they survive that long.

It's as if they became (base game) Free French units.

HI Bill

Whats going on here is that in the free_unit.txt file if you have LAND_PERCENTAGE set to 0 and NAVAL_PERCENTAGE set to 100 any land units in a transport at sea are classified as ships and when surrender happens they then change their ownership to the new country. HOWEVER if they are not on a transport they are removed from the map. The code for free_unit.txt should treat transports and amphibs as land units when issuing the surrender commands.

As we know, some French units defected to the UK when France surrendered. This could be a feature rather than a bug?

Thanks for explaining, though I disagree. If they are at sea then their situation would be more akin to naval units in deciding whether or not to surrender, as they have the ability to sail to an allied country and continue the fight from there.

But then what is the difference between French units in France surrendering and French units in Madagascar. Why do the ones in Madagascar have to surrender (or even the ones in the UK) but the French units in a transport are just fine.

Meaning, if you transported a french unit into the UK and France surrenders it is removed from the game.

For consistency I would say the transport has to go to!
