Personally, for the most part it was because it wasnt on steam. Additioanlly for a long while I didnt fully understand what the game really was which pushed me away, until a youtuber, NinjaDojoGaming?, played it and honestly that had a large impression on me, as I do plan on buying it on steam this week.

Additionally, I was talking with a friend about this and I thought his response was interesting.

"slightly burnt-out regarding East-Front centric games 😄, though I want to try WEGO North Africa"

bought it last week. realized that I should have bought much earlier. I will buy overlord on the release day probably. :D

note: there is a thread on steam community forum of WEGO Stalingrad. It is titled as "Spent a few hours with this one". There the user mentioned two possible reasons which might be an obstacle for this game to gain more attention. They seem plausible to me. the devs might want to check that thread. obviously I am not a professional on marketing, but might worth to take a note.

I am on the edge now. I have tons of wargames (though in the end I keep playing just few of them), and each one requires considerable time commitment to learn them. So I am trying (without much success) to buy only those that I will most probably keep playing. For the context, ATM my top fav are Shadow Empire, WDS Panzer Campaigns & Squad Battles, Close Combat series.

I did research into WEGO Stalingrad, because I like the concept, but I still can't understand the depth of it - from videos it looks like comparable to Warplan or Hex of Steel (though these are not WEGO).

I keep reading that the tactical battles in Stalingrad are "brutal", that would be a sell for me, but cannot find any other evidence of that. But then there are WDS Squad Battles and they are really great, albeit using different system (IGOYOUGO). So it's like "should I really dedicated my time and money to find out if I will keep playing it?"

Oh choices choices....

i own or have played ever version of this on any format and type i can find as it's something of a long term hobby of mine, the map, the time frame and the units involved etc, do it as well as the 48k spectrum version by ( Arnhem, The 'Market Garden' Operation, by CCS, coded and written by bob smith (R T Smith) and i'd be well pleased.

the map has to be right, the entire campaign can be done, and then 4 or 5 versions or area's of given units sizes in more detailed maps for battles, with various what if options, like wind for drop displacement, supply options, timings for support units to arrive on time, or late etc for both sides, speed of XXX Corps advance or more time for Tea, more or less air support.

82nd Airborne Division, 89% of troops landed on or within 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) of their drop zones and 84% of gliders landed on or within 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) of their landing zones. so altering the wind makes a big difference etc.

508th jump was perfect with the regiment 90% assembled by 15:00.

so timing, wind, delays eg weather has a big effect on what if options.

planning, if you could alter it, has a massive effect on the outcome, example,

1st Airborne Division landed at 13:30, Only half of the division arrived with the first lift and only half of these (1st Parachute Brigade) could advance on the bridge. The remaining troops had to defend the drop zones.

Communication breakdown again could be an option?

The British radios did not function at any range; some had difficulty receiving signals from just a few hundred metres and others received nothing at all. It was found after landing that the radios had been set to different frequencies, two of which coincided with German and British public broadcasting stations.

for the US,

The only means of calling for air support was through two special American units dropped with the 1st Airborne Division. These units were equipped with "Veeps": jeeps having Very High Frequency SCR-193 crystal sets. It was found impossible to communicate with aircraft on the higher of two frequencies for this and the sets could not be tuned to the lower frequency

Timings,

Horrocks had expected that the Irish Guards would have been able to advance the 13 miles (21 km) to Eindhoven within two to three hours but they had only covered 7 miles (11 km). The operation was already starting to fall behind schedule. again something of a option, slower or faster makes a huge difference on game play and outcome.

German reactions.

eg delays or lack of as a options, and what if's, the Germans allegedly recovered a copy of the Market Garden plan from the body of an American officer, who should not have carried it into combat, and or the delaying the sending of the 9th SS Panzer Division to Nijmegen., again major outcome on overall game play and ending and a great what if to offer.

9th SS Reconnaissance Battalion delayed, held or used elsewhere option.

82nd Airborne zone, altered timing on arrival etc, another good what if option, with hindsight can have a major impact on overall ending.

101st Airborne zone, Son bridge had been destroyed early or later or not at all option, minor to medium impact on overall campaign but another good option for a what if etc.

Arnhem plenty of what if options here for both sides, with each effecting the outcome and tbh nobody has given as many with what could have been a missed opportunity to game play for what ifs etc

Oosterbeek 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade, arrived early, later, scattered or on target etc with each option being a different effect and event and outcome.

Nijmegen 325th Glider Infantry Regiment arrived early, later, or not at all (like what actually happens, or scattered or on target etc with each option being a different effect and event and outcome.

Wijchen 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, arrived early, later, scattered or on target etc with each option being a different effect and event and outcome.

Eindhoven–Veghel German counter-attacks, again arrived early, later, a small force of Panther tanks arrived at Son and started firing on the Bailey bridge, with options of arrived early, later, or not at all, or fired on the Bailey bridge with options of destroying it, damaging it delaying etc until repaired options etc.

78 German bombers took off to attack Eindhoven, with options of arrived early, later, or not at all.

The Allies had no anti-aircraft guns in the city, with options to have some, have lots or none at all, which was the fact at the time and what happened allowing the Germans to drop "a clear golden cluster of parachute flares" and bomb Eindhoven without loss. The city centre was shattered and the water pressure failed; over 200 houses were "gutted" and 9,000 buildings were damaged.

An ammunition convoy and trucks carrying gasoline were also hit, which causes a delay, and yes options are, happens, doesn't happen etc.

as this can be done on a daily basic the options can be small, large with daily options and types to add to small, minor or major outcomes and what if's, i'd play it, buy it and play it some more as the depth of options and outcomes would let this be played over and over again, but yes balance maybe a nightmare, but as long as all the players are in place, this could be epic.
