How to conduct a Beta Test?

Post by Curtis Lemay »

How to conduct a Beta Test?

I texted the above question to Erik back on May 5th. That text is still in my outbox. I don’t know if Erik is off for the Summer or what. My hope is that someone is still on site that knows the answer and can provide some help with the process.

I’m ready to conduct a Beta Test of the next upgrade to TOAW-IV.

For sure, I need FTP resources, since the material to be distributed will approach 400MB. Also, there should be some sort of post to this site as an announcement:

https://www.matrixgames.com/beta

And there are probably more items I haven’t thought of that will be required. Any help will be appreciated.

Since this is a beta test, how about you delete 90% of the graphics and just use the minimal set necessary. No need for people to download 400MB of fluff just to see if the programming works.

There are about 400MB of material that will have to be posted on the site. But participants will only need to download a little more than half of that. There will be two sets of update materials, one for a Steam installation, and one for a Matrix installation. And about half the documentation on the site will be for designers and half will be for players. Regardless, the graphics aren't "fluff". They are necessary for the update to function properly.

If you use a good FTP client (I use Core FTP), it doen't take long to access large files on an FTP site. There is no good reason to give the testers less than the full update.

Hi Bob, et. al.,

Apologies that you haven't heard back from me. After trying to get things moving last year I've had to put TOAW on the back burner for a while due to other priorities and projects. When I have time, I'll look through the build that you're proposing for a beta and we'll see when we can move this forward.

Regards,

- Erik
