Re: THE THREAD!!!
I think many of us—especially in our 20s, 30s, even 40s—don’t spend much time thinking about our own mortality. I used to be that way too. But once you reach your mid-50s, something shifts.
For me, that moment came two years ago, at age 57, when I survived a massive widowmaker heart attack. Statistically, I had a 13% chance of making it through. That experience changed everything—how I see life, what I value, and what I no longer worry about.
When a close friend—someone who’s had two near-death experiences of his own—tells me, “This is my last decade,” I understand. He’s in his mid-to-late 60s. And I’ve come to realize I might have 10, maybe 20, and if I’m blessed, 30 years left. That clarity makes you re-evaluate everything. The things that once felt so important often don’t matter anymore. And the things you once overlooked suddenly matter deeply.
To someone younger, this might sound like doom and gloom—but it’s not. It’s just the perspective that comes with age and experience. It’s the quiet acceptance that life is finite, and that makes the time you have all the more meaningful.

You should have been like Jack Benny who stayed 39 until his daughter turned 40. He stated that it was hard to be 39 with a 40 year old daughter. Did this every happen to you in the US Army?Zovs wrote: Thu Jul 31, 2025 7:26 am I think many of us—especially in our 20s, 30s, even 40s—don’t spend much time thinking about our own mortality.
