Shigeji Abe leaned back a bit to stretch himself. Ah, so good to be alive! After so much, and now look at him, in charge of scheduling all of the shipyards in Japan reporting to his imperial majesty. Oh Ko! Such luck! Such fortune to come to him. But, he is going to have to be careful or he will join the rest of those peasants chattering their teeth in the garden at the palace. So, things need to go better but still there is plenty of opportunity for him. How nice!

8 Dec 41 - SRA Updates

Seizo Arisue sat in the dim light of a sushi bar in the Kanto district enjoying the whirls of smoke from his cigarette as he relaxed over a cup of warm sake. It was one of the many such places here, on a side alley with a non-descript doorway. Family owned and operated, and as such, secure. As the only surviving Intelligence Division Chief from the start of the war (was that only so few hours ago?), he had a lot to contemplate. He knew he was largely fortunate in that he had been given the SRA operations in terms of intel monitoring/reporting. If he had been given (taken) either of the other Chief positions it would have been his entrails in the garden.

How could we have missed so much? How did the allies know so much? As much as he hated it, he privately had to agree with Hyakutake-san. He still hadn’t decided if he was to publicly agree tomorrow with the ass, but yes, clearly the allies had broken several of our codes. There was no other explanation of the events that had taken place.

Seizo poured another cup and took a long drink. No point reflecting on the others' areas, let those turtle-eggs deal with it. He had enough.

PI – The landing was opposed by HOARDS of dive bombers. And they seemed to know about the new landing site in South Luzon, not the west coast. And USAAF, not USN. There were more in the PI alone than what his pre-war manifests stated had been built to date. How did they hide that? Where did the pilots come from? The only good news to date here was that at least the ground operations had not hit any significant roadblocks, no major surprises as yet. But damage to the time table had been done, they already a day behind schedule at the end of the first day and not keeping pace with the prewar timetable at all which had been aggressive.

Malaysia/Singapore – Again, the size and readiness of the opposing air groups was 3x the prewar estimates. Not only numbers, but top line aircraft at that. Worse the PoW and Repulse were still at large. The trap for them had turned into a trap for the IJN units assigned … a huge CAP trap over some DD’s. Losses of prime aviators, staggering. Like everything else, the time table was being missed.

So, how was he going to stay alive tomorrow? These were all intelligence misses. Hmmm, he may have to support Hyakutake-san after all. It wasn’t so much his groups fault on the intel miss as it was that the allies knew before hand and were able to steal the element of surprise, a key facet of the whole war. Turned in that light, the current progress was actually magnificent. Yes, that might be the best way. Don’t highlight the original timetable, re-do the timetable with the surprise element missing. Then compare to that. Yes, that might work …. He needed something to get through tomorrow.

9Dec41 - Tokyo - Office of the Chamberlain to HIE; General Hata

Tired from the long night flight on the crappy Ki-57 General Hata arrived in Juji's office first thing. The attendant announced him. After the greetings, in his normal way he came straight to the point.

Sharing the recon assessments with Juji he looked at him and said "We need to change things and fast or the operation will not succeed in its current form." Juji asked "So you believe this, 10K guns?", "No, but clearly something, no a LOT of something is there that we didn't know about and the current operation just doesn't have enough to get the job done." Juji, looked at him, considered the man across from him for a few moments, and then said "What do you need?". Hata was brief, "I need at least 8 more divisions, I can steal 4 from the continent, but I need 5 more. I'm thinking the 4th, 7th, 33rd, 53rd, and 54th. I know the last two are B class, but there just aren't any other units." Juji replied: "You are aware of what the units current plans are, correct?". Hata: "Of course, but if we fail at HK, those other plans are moot. We MUST succeed at HK, and it must be quick. In addition, we need a stronger commander for the Kwangtung Army, I need another FM to be able to effectively operate in conjunction with my team. Shuji would be my suggestion, but there are several other good candidates."

Juji considered these two requests, they were each individually enormous "asks", and Hata had made both. Juji considered this, Hata was not a green commander. He had spent WWI in the trenches in Europe, he had been fighting in China for over 6 years. Frankly, in Juji's opinion he was singularly the best FM that Japan possessed. And here he was making enormous "asks". Why? Clearly, he was seeing things that had not yet been seen by others. Oh Ko!!! They needed Eiichi, but he was still in the air hours away. Then it clicked ... Hata and Eiichi had always been, not exactly friends, but they had almost always seen things in the same way, the same clarity. It was time to trust experience. Juji looked at Hata carefully, "I will relay your requests to HIE with my endorsement. Thank you for this. Good hunting."

Hata bowed and took his leave. He left straight back to the airport where he had the plane lifting back to Nanjing within an hour. He landed in Nanjing to be met by his Comm Officer who handed him a decoded priority message: "Units requested have been given prep orders for HK. Enshipment to Canton soonest. 2nd request being worked on, expect result within week. Office of the Chamberlain". Well, his risk had worked out, he hoped he had enough to pull this off ... or rather that LGen Sakai of the 23rd Army now had enough to crack this nut. Since it was quite literally all that there was without pulling units from either of the PI or Malay operations which simply couldn't happen. They were all deep in contact with the enemy, disengaging now would be suicidal. Well, the die are set to roll.

9Dec41 - Tokyo Imperial Grounds

The new (2nd or 3rd now?) Merchant Naval Procurement officer steps forward with his build plan for 1942/43.
HIE: What are all of these PB craft here?
IJN: They are escort craft for our merchant ships.
HIE: But they are merchant vessels themselves.
IJN: Yes, that is the idea …
HIE: Idea?
IJN: Yes, we can conserve the naval ship yards for the fighting ships and we utilize our merchant yards for patrol craft.
HIE: Yes, but these ships are big, slow, poorly armed, and have no armor. They waste incredible amounts of materials!
IJN: But the Naval yards …
HIE: Need expansion. Where are our mine sweepers? We must have transports for our troops, resources and oil. What about specialized support ships for aircraft and repair?
IJN: We can convert …
HIE: And waste more time and resources?
IJN: Uhhh …
HIE: Your ancestors have called. Join them. Now. (The officer shuffles off to exit to the garden area where a pillow awaits for kneeling). We re-convene on this topic after lunch.

HIE thinks to himself, "Was I not clear yesterday? I will find the right people ..." He casts a glance at his Chancellor ...

8Dec41 - 9Dec41 - Jiro Horikoshi
Rocking gently in the overnight train from Hiroshima to Tokyo; Jiro is a bit shaky, how is he going to respond to the Emperor’s summons? What does he want? He lights another cigarette and stares vacantly out the window as he exhales slowly … the smoke from his cigarette curling upwards.

Afterwards ….
All of the single engine designs for Japan rest on his shoulders … nothing is more important. So much …
He knows all of the other Chief Engineering Designers by reputation, but other than the ones here at Mitsubishi, he has met only a couple. Now, half of them will be taking project direction from him the rest from Kiro Honjo. How can he evaluate so many projects, and the teams are spread out all over Japan, how is he going to communicate with them? They cannot consolidate as the design materials and workshops are simply too scarce.

Kiro and he hash through the chief designer list on the train back to Hiroshima. They have 15 designers besides themselves. The preliminary review results in that Kiro takes 7, Jiro keeps the rest.

Surprisingly, Jiro has more projects than Kiro, albeit Kiro’s are bigger projects. Truthfully, Jiro may have to take another one or two … so many projects …

9Dec41 - Train to Hiroshima - Kiro Honjo

Kiro leans back in his seat rocking with the train, Senior Chief Designer for Multi-engine. Nice sounding title. He looks at the service requirements and what is in process … no wonder so many joined their ancestors at the Emperor’s suggestion. A gaggle of complete nonsense, and that is being generous.

LB – the core of any air force. What does he have?
G3M, G4M his twins. The G4M was a waste and he had argued hard against it. Nevertherless, it is done and it is marginally better than the G3M. Good range, but no armor, small bomb load, decent torpedo platform. True of both aircraft. Focus on the newer, drop the older.

Ki-21 has a bit better load, but limited range. It is also more rugged, more forgiving to battle damage compared to his G3/G4’s where everything was sacrificed to get a torpedo delivered to extreme range. And following soon is the Ki-49, which is like the Ki-21, but using a SMALLER engine with 2 stage twin charger that (generally if rumors are to be believed) doesn’t work to get the power needed.

Looking forward, there are 2 nice designs on the drawing boards, Mitsu’s Ki-67 and Yokasoka’s P1Y. The P1Y is a 3 crew fast, light 2E bomber. The Ki-67 bigger, 6 crew, more like the Ki-21 but just as fast as the P1Y. That’s about it.

Bottom line is that the services are asking for 2 needs: Bomb load and range. They want both, but of course all you can do is fix one and maximize the other.
OK, so near term we can use the G4M for the long range, minimal bomb load (can we get to 1000kg? or so) and the Ki-21 will need to stay in service and try to provide for more bomb load. Maybe. Ki-49 needs to be killed … it doesn’t meet any requirements if it is in the hangar …. unless the engine problems can be fixed. He needs to talk with the new engine Chief Designer.

Going forward, the Ki-67 has the size to have both a decent bombload and range, particularly if the new engines come through. So, this is a main focus.

He needs something bigger though … what? 4E like the allies and like his original proposal for the G4M? Mmmm, not much in the cupboard. And truthfully, it is too late to start a completely new design. Even dusting off his previous 4E concept would be too vast a project. By the time it arrived, the war would be over. What to do here?

Recon
Ki-46. Simple. It’s a beautiful design. None better. 1st flight was gorgeous. Needs engines … what is the status?

Patrol
H6K and H8K. Both engineering team leads are in place, designs are good. H8K is already in trials and looks good. What a behemoth though! Huge. The only 4E aircraft in the IJ inventory. Could this be adapted to ground take-off? What a payload it could have …

Transports
The IJA designs are just terrible, short range and no payload. What a waste. The IJN stole (licensed) the best US design (L2D), the 2nd is derived from the G3M (L3Y). Better, the L3Y is range driven the L2D payload driven. Perfect. So, both options are already done. And of course both patrol designs can be modified into transports as well. At least this category, albeit not terribly important, is firm.

Night Fighter
Jiro turfed this one to him. The specs are conflicting, but basically it’s not a 1E solution. Needs at least 2 crew, maybe 3. Speed and stability are paramount. Payload somewhat. Range is negotiable. Ki-46 is clearly a candidate. Fast, only 2 crew though. Guns could be CL. Needs a good designer to take this on and this "twist" work. There is already heat on this one and the war is a day old. Supposedly, the imperialists in Europe have shared some data and it appears that we are not the only ones who favor night bombing …

Enough for today ...

9Dec41 - Economics Ministry - Saburo Ushiroku

Background: In a war economy under a sole ruler, the Economics Ministry is a bit different than many would be familiar with. It is not the all encompassing order of the post-war Communist control that many are familiar with, and yet not the open market "guidance" seen in most of the allied economies during the war. It is something in between, maybe a bit closer to the allied "guidance", but where the guidance is enforced a "bit" more severely and some industries are almost under total government control. The 'guidance" comes largely from the Economics ministry as it monitors all of the industries. Enforcement though is directly from the Monarchy. Control is dictated by lack of compliance to the guidance, so most industries are heavily incentivized to follow the guidance or lose their business to the crown. War has always been a very profitable enterprise, so really only the slow or stupid lose control. Everyone else is about making money.

Deep within the Economics Ministry, nowhere special, is an analyst Saburo Ushiroku who is tasked with tracking manpower usage within the country. He is rather young for this position, but he has held it now for a few years after his mentor passed suddenly. He looks at his final numbers for the day, shakes his head, and starts the recalculation. He must have made an error. Several hours later, he has the same numbers. It isn't good at all.

Manpower reserves have dropped over 30% since the war started and the HI reserves have plummeted almost 20%. The numbers are real. Someone is moving TOO fast trying to fix something. He gathers his papers and heads up to the new Sr Minister's office. This needs to be reported.

9 Dec 41 - SRA Updates

Seizo Arisue is at his desk reviewing the evening updates. Dark now for several hours, but not as dark as his thoughts.

Yesterday, the somewhat successful landings on Luzon at Naga with a feint at Atimonan. Today, multiple landings in Mindinao: Cotabato, Dadjangas, Davao, and Oroquieta. Opposed, but the ground forces are pushing through. The naval losses ... Dorniers. Never even heard of them before, but now? Beware the F-ing Dorniers!!!
(All Hail the Andy Mac!!!!) In addition, the A-26 Dive Bombers with their P-39 escorts. Our eagles are losing 2, 3 and sometimes 4:1 or more. Reputedly, the P-39 armament has been changed, in addition to the fact that it is faster than our best fighter A6M of which we have too few and almost 100mph faster than the pitiful Ki-27b's.

In Malay, Kota Bharu fell today and Singora has been reinforced. Again, army forces are ok, but air (and naval) assets are being depleted at a horrific rate. The British Hurricanes are murdering us. There seems to be at least 3 full wings of them at Singapore alone.

So, yes, progress, but losses, especially air losses are torrid.

9Dec41 Colonel Kotani Etsuo, North Vice Director

Yesterday, we took control of Tsingsing. That's it. The surprise attack that precipitated the war was a total surprise in China, basically NOTHING had been pre-positioned other than the forces in Canton for Hong Kong. The idiot that had been in charge of Kwantung Army had done nothing stating that he didn't want precipitate anything. Dung eater. Well, his teeth finished chattering in the garden long ago. His current fill in is no better. The fundamental issue is that front line troops are ALL tied down with garrison duties. Other garrison troops have to be identified, recruited, and then moved into place BEFORE the attack troops can be moved into place. Oh, and to 'help' things, pretty much the entire air force in China is being used as replacements for losses in the Philippines and Malaysia.

Hong Kong, still looks like a disaster. At least Gen Hata's visit bore some fruit. But this means the delay on Hong Kong will be weeks ... the units are still moving to ports as are the ships to transport them. The 7th ID has started boarding in Hakodate, but then the long travel to Canton, through the frigging minefields around Hong Kong. I wonder how many ships we will lose to mines?

10 Dec 41 - Hiroshima: Jiro Horikoshi, 1E Aircraft Sr Designer

After a sleepless night, or at best very restless, Jiro is back in his office. He has gotten a lot of thoughts organized, now he needs to start communicating them.

Eagles
Top priority, always. He reviews the specs on the designs from IJA development bureau … he knows the IJN ones already. Some really good designs here, but such short range. What were they thinking? We attack, attack, and attack. You need range for that, without range there is no attack. They have nothing on the board after Oscar with range!!? OK, that means we have to come back to the IJN designs.

A6M Reisen- its ok, his lovely eagle, but already so dated. Range it has, but speed, armor, armament are all lacking and there is no way to build them in as she is too small.

N1K – this looks good, but she is never going to be a carrier plane with her undercarriage and structural support. Not the range of his beloved A6M, nor its agility. However, she’s bigger; big enough to hold the guns, armor, and fuel.

J2M – His Raiden was almost ready to fly, the prototype was less than 2 months away. Like the Ki-44, these were interceptors; maneuverability and range sacrificed for climb and speed.

A7M
His beloved Reppu. She’s going to be complicated though. Folding wings, essentially a first for IJ fighters, but the B5N had long had folding wings to be able to fit on the elevators …. He knows the tradeoffs here all too well: hangar space, takeoff distance, range … such a tight balance. Alas, she has no powerplant, she needs power, lot’s of it.

Bombers
All of the naval 1E bombers flying now are so archaic and everything new is so delayed. What to do? The note from Nakagawa, the new Sr Engine Designer, states that all liquid cooled engine development has been cancelled. All new designs must use an engine from the Ha-3x or Ha-4x families.

TB
The B6 is so far behind, first test flight a complete disaster. Plane augered in after 10 mins of flight. Weak team. Nothing looks right. So that means we need to upgrade the B5 quickly and then get the B6 back on track.

B5N
The current production model, which just started back in production again (after the recently departed designer confessed that the B6 was not ready to produce) is slow, bi-plane slow, and has no armor. It has good range and is a steady platform to attack from. Well, there is no getting more speed from the design, but we can add armor and extend range if we can get more power. Heavier engine can be balanced by the armor and additional fuel. Trivial design issues really, especially given how low and slow this plane is.

DB
The D4Y is now at a stop. A completely new engine will have to be determined and the entire front cowling and aircraft balance re-computed. So, basically a monster project. Again, we need something to keep the D3A competitive …

D3A
It is old, slow, short range, small bomb load, and no armor. What’s good about it? Oh yeah, really accurate. Ok, again nothing to do about the speed; its inherent in the overall design. The range, bomb load, and armor all depend upon the power plant. We need more power, let’s see what Nakagawa can give us and when.

Recon
The C5M makes even the B5N or D3A planes look new. The only good news is that the IJN and IJA fly essentially the same thing. Well, the one model is using the Ha-31 vs the Ha-35 can we do anything there? Nakagawa-san had better be on top of things.

Float
E13A looks good, but there is little to follow on. E15K, maybe, that single use float pylon is something of an issue unless we get it to be recoverable. Range, range, range is the key here and these planes can never be big, so how do we get there?

OK, at least he has something to say …. How many teams can he create? Sub-leaders? Management is such a headache, far better when he was a senior designer of a single team.

10Dec41 - Economics Ministry - Saburo Ushiroku

A new request, directly from the current acting-Minister for Economics: aircraft losses to date.

Saburo thinks about this request. It is quite new to him and actually within the Ministry. He will need to make some inquiries as he has no data on this at all and the acting-Minister provided nothing except the request. Spending most of the morning on the office phone (yes, one phone for the entire office of which his desk is only one of many) he finally gets a contact within the Intelligence Directorate. Yes, they have some data, but yes he will have to come and get it and no they cannot send it to him. Their offices are, not exactly on the other side of Tokyo, but far enough away that it took him all afternoon to cross town and back.

Finally, he is able to examine their data. To call it unorganized clutter is generous. They have approximations (what is their source?) of both allied and IJ losses by model and date. What was given to him looks like some form of summary data, not the actual raw data. Someone, somewhere has already done some "rectification". I wonder what was lost? Anyway, after assembling the data and then doing a basic plot, this is what he comes up with. Oh ko!! This is trouble ...

411209 Air Loss Chart
411209 Air Loss Chart
Screenshot 2025-07-30 062804 411209 Air Loss.jpg (28.19 KiB) Viewed 1030 times

Ignore the allied loss numbers, who knows where they came from. The IJ air force has lost almost 200 aircraft in 2 days. Even Saburo knows that the total daily aircraft production is like 10/day. The losses represent a 10x replacement rate loss rate. In another few days, IJ will have NO aircraft to fight the war!!!

I think that Japan may be in trouble! But not just because of the aircraft but also due to the pilot losses . . .

Maybe some CAP traps could help.

10Dec41 – Tokyo; Imperial Quarters, Tatsumi Eiichi

Tatsumi was meeting with HIE and the Chancellor after the morning briefing. A number of topics had been covered. Finally, Tatsumi was able to broach the topic he wanted to for today.

So, this is what I have been working on the last few months in Berlin. It struck me there that the air war, as opposed to ground or naval, is going to be crucial. Yes, the Germans blitzkrieg requires ground elements, but it all starts with the air attacks. They set the tone, and control of the air is crucial. I spent most of the early morning hours with Jiro and Kiro reviewing this. While, they have some reservations, they do endorse this analysis. Let me present this to you with some explanations. Let's start with Jiro's "Eagles" as he calls them.

"Eagle" Comparisons by role
"Eagle" Comparisons by role

Tatsumi: With Jiro and Kiro, we spent a fair amount of time going over the metrics used to create these comparisons. I won't state that they completely agreed with what I used, BUT they did agree that largely these rankings must be correct as changing the weights a bit had little effect and they did agree with the general characterizations of the aircraft.

Juji: I thought our A6M was the best fighter, over-powering is how it was described to me.

Tatsumi: The A6M is one of the very best escorts, which is what it was designed for. Also, note, it is far better in this role than it's closest Naval competitor. BUT, the other key role for fighters are Interceptors, meaning defenders, and there the allies are very strong. The P-39 and P-40 specifically, and they are accounting for our difficulties in both China and the Philippines. Now, we can see why. Also note that even as an interceptor, the A6M is the best naval fighter. Finally, note that the Ki-43, even in it's latest variant is always behind the A6M. The A6M is simply our best fighter in any and every role. Obviously Night Fighters is a new concept. My last thought to share is that both the Beaufighter and the Blenheim are 2E Fighters. They are grading high at this point due to speed and DUR, however, more recent performance from Europe suggests that in a dogfight with heavily armed 1E fighters, they come off very poorly. I built this with help from our German allies who believe in their 2E fighter design (Me110). You might want to ignore those 2 entries for now until we get more data on this.

Bomber Comparisons by role
Bomber Comparisons by role
Screenshot 2025-07-30 064816 411207 Bomber Comp.jpg (72.09 KiB) Viewed 1020 times
Level and Night Bombing, well let's just say that Jiro's comment was "And I argued vehemently that the G4M project needs to be a 4E design, but was overruled." The chart agrees with him. We are in trouble here. Payload is our biggest problem. We spend all that resource to put the bomber over target, and we get little payback in comparison to the allied 4E bombers. Even their primary 2E bomber, the B-25 is better.

Dive Bomber: Known disaster here. Kiro already had this as one of his highest priorities and this just validates it. Again, biggest issue is bomb load is too small to have effect.

Torpedo Bomber: Ahh, where we have excellence. Note though that the allies are clearly moving away from this. The Germans thought the reason wasn't the effectiveness of the torpedo, but rather that the losses are too high on approach. The allies feel that a Dive Bomber with big enough bomb got more successful attacks with similar damage. This is something that must be watched carefully, and we need more recent inputs from our Naval Commanders. Radio silence right now with the KB is a major hindrance on recent attack tactics and results.

Other Comparisons by role
Other Comparisons by role
Screenshot 2025-07-30 064816 411207 Other Comp.jpg (70.17 KiB) Viewed 1020 times
Now to our last group, but not the least.

Recon: Even as dated as it is, our C5M/Ki-15 is the premier design. Why do the allies not put more into this? We're not sure, but we believe because they rely on SigInt.

Transports: As you know the L2D is a licensed version of the DC-3, so they are actually a tie. There is a BIG step between the 2nd and 3rd position here, and 3 - 10 are all about the same. Jiro pointed out that the L3Y design has unique range capability. I may have to factor that higher, because as you know, our Philippine assault was completely predicated upon it's ability to reach the Naga base from Formosa. That would move it up to 3rd with all of the Army transports lagging. The Naval TP's are clearly the best.

Patrol: Yes, the H6K is the dominant patrol plane, BUT the allied PBY is almost as good and literally half the cost as it is 2E versus the H6K 4E. However the cost, we are competitive.

Bomber Killer: I added this in at the insistence of my German partners. Quote: "If you ignore the allied 4E bombers it will be to your detriment. They are EXTREMELY rugged." This is where firepower, climb, and speed matter most. We don't have a solution for this. The A6M is our best answer, but as you can see, it doesn't even make the list. They also emphasized that cannons with explosive shells is the only effective weapon. Machine guns, even heavy 13mm calibers, are just not effective. The minimum is a 20mm cannon.

A couple of big take-aways from this:
1. Notice that the Army did not have a single leading design, with the exception of the tie for Recon. In all other areas, their designs are lagging, in some cases lagging badly.
2. In spite of the efforts of the Navy, we still have a number of challenges.

The mood in the room is decidedly somber ...

Maybe some CAP traps could help.
Situation is worse than so far exposed ... and yes, the pilot losses haven't been looked at ... yet. They are just getting some info in (radio silence from KB is killing them). Elsewhere, it is slow as there is reticence to admit anything other than success.

As for CAP traps, wait a little bit to see exactly how bad things are getting. Andy serves it up BIG and DEEP here!

All HAIL the ANDY MAC!!!!!

10Dec41 Tatsumi Eiichi: Intel Chief

Yesterday, the HIE went on a short trip to an ancient temple outside Kyoto. It was a very rare event for HIE to leave the Imperial Grounds. At the temple, he gave a private audience to worshipper who frequented this particular temple. The older man, bowing so low to the ground and HIE engaged in a whispered exchange lasting for more than 20 minutes. Once HIE had left, Chancellor Juji waited while the man rose to his feet and escorted him back to his home. The two left together, conversing as they walked, with ring of imperial guard 5m around them to give them privacy. Juji had raised a hand about 5 minutes into their walk and a Chamberlain staff member had joined them for the rest of the walk taking notes behind them. He filled many pages ... many pages.

Today, Tatsumi learned that the meeting had been with Torena Abe and that he had come out of retirement to lead the new national pilot training program. A legend that every child learned about in primary school, Abe had been one of the few Japanese aces from WWI and the only one who had survived the war. He was a national hero of legendary fame. That the Emperor would leave the palace for a meeting was almost unheard of. To leave to meet a “commoner” no matter his legacy … well it spoke volumes. To travel to Abe’s home outside Kyoto to personally request his assistance with the war effort. Legend.

Obviously, HIE was making a statement, but Tatsumi was still unravelling it.
• First it meant that HIE recognized the importance of pilots and their training … he had just elevated it to national prominence.
• Recruitment just became a non-issue. Pilots had already had some prestige, they had now moved to a whole new level.
• Resources would be allocated to support this effort … and there was no doubt about Imperial backing.
• Numbers, HIE clearly felt that there was a significant shortfall presently. Tatsumi did not know where or how, but it was clear to him that HIE had determined this was a big issue. So, training numbers would be ramping up, FAST. They didn’t need much, airstrip, a few planes (obsolete would be fine, even better as he understood from discussions with Hiro that many of the older models were very forgiving in flight). Fuel of course, probably a fair amount of that in fact.

OK, but what was he still not seeing all of it yet. These were obvious, but none of this necessitated a personal sojourn by HIE. So, why? He thought back on everything he knew about Abe, and truthfully, almost all was public knowledge being who and what he was. Why had he been “allowed” to leave the service? He seemed to recall something there. Ahh, yes, Abe had always been honorable, but the issue was that his priority was the good of the service first, his commanding officers second. That had created friction, particularly in the ruling Junta in the decade and more time leading up to the war they now found themselves in. Yes, there had been talk that when Abe had “retired” it had not been voluntary, but rather forced upon him to keep quiet. Reputedly. Is this what HIE was stating, that he wanted loyalty first to the service? Maybe. The difference was that Abe had thoughts about tactics and the correspondingly impacts upon aircraft designs …. and his opinions had run counter to the prevailing thoughts of the Army at that time. Why had the single best expert been ignored? Interesting, and it contained significant connotations if correct. Tatsumi needed time and observations to confirm if he was correct. If he was ….

How do you feel about 3 emergency reinforcement trigger lines for India?

Ledo line would trigger when East Coast of India, Calcutta and communications to China are threatened, joint British and US response.

Bombay line would trigger when of British Raj is collapsing, British response, US is not willing to fight for British colonial posession, Japan receives Indian units.

Delhi line would trigger when communications to USSR are threatened, British, US and possibly Soviet response.

This would still leave Ceylon and the southern tip of India out of these triggers, that would be the IJN option, the above would be the IJA option keeping in line with their madness.

Seacat:

I don't know how to add those trigger lines. To my knowledge that is hard coded and beyond modders capability.

You can ADD to the current trigger, not create new ones. AFAIK.

Can you move the existing line using +/-?

I might have to start learning how to edit the game even if I am hardly the best person for that.

Again, no idea how to do so. They are not defined anywhere that is visible to players that I know of. They are hard coded. Meaning within the compiled code that we do not have access to.

December 10 Hiroshima midday: Captain Onoda, Naval Vice Director

Captain Onoda walked along the waterfront docks of the giant Kure harbor. He had been walking for some time already attempting to relieve stress and tension. The war had been going horribly wrong for the Chrysanthemum flag thus far. Problems had started immediately. Nagumo’s KB TF had been “ambushed” at sea just hours prior to the PH “surprise” attack. Details were still not fully known as they were still under radio silence, but what was known from listening posts was troubling.
• The attack on Pearl Harbor did not happen.
• The KB was intercepted by at least 4 CV’s of the USN. 4? They only had 3 in the Pacific, 1 in the Atlantic and 1 still in dock. 4? At least?
• Several ships in the Kido Butai had been hit hard, fires raging, flight ops curtailed on at least two CV’s.
• Based upon the IJ aircraft radio chatter, 9 CV’s, 4 BB’s, 12 CA’s, and a large number of assorted lesser ships had been claimed sunk. He believed none of it.

He did believe that the enemy had also been hard hit. More than that, he still could not state with any assurance despite a lot of pressure to do so. He was very aware of the allied (especially the USN) damage control capabilities. There were no confirming reports yet at all from any of their numerous sources. Worse, he still had little idea of what the original opposing force was actually composed of … quite bad for an Intel Chief recently promoted.

In spite of whatever their losses (at least 2 of 6 CV’s on fire! He knew the fear of fire onboard any IJ ship), the KB was apparently following through with the original plan of interdicting Pearl Harbor from the West Coast. This, more than anything else, confirmed that there had been an action, the KB had inflicted some serious damage, and Nagumo believed his forces to still be dominant. Beyond that, he was all a swim. And the KB was still under radio silence ….
