Weird thing happened. One of my RO subs in the Aleutians is out of fuel. They're pulling out the oars and will make it back in a month. Then probably another month to repair all the damage. *sigh*
Supposedly, this isn't supposed to happen if you have them on a patrol zone ... they're supposed to RTB for fuel B4 they run out. Yet, I have 2 subs just like your Aleutian sub in the same state ... limping back to port accruing damage each day
(yes, when out of fuel, they accrue daily damage). I went back and confirmed from prior saves that they were on patrol, not set to a hex. Mysterious. I was worried it was a symptom of data corruption (variable memory overwrite) in my game, but since you're seeing it, I suspect not. Both of my subs have some small damage (~10 sys, 1-2 float/engine), so my current rationale is that the damage caused some fuel to leak before it was caught. :D  8-)

Two ships (CM and xAK) took damage and are on fire. I'm not sure they'll make it but they were put into their own TF and are working their way back to Kwajalein. It'll take about 9 days to make it but they either will or will succumb to the flames.
I will add an escort (DD/E/SC/PB as appropriate) to a ship on fire. Empirically It helps, but I have not done a rigorous test to prove it.

She was set to a patrol zone until I spotted some enemy ships and sent her after them. I didn't check the fuel situation, so that may have caused the problem.

I have seen this happen numerous times over the years. I think that the AI fails to take into account the extra fuel spent when a sub is dealing with surface forces or spotted/attacked by air units. Anyway, however it happens, I have taken to checking all TFs for fuel status every two to three days and ordering subs on patrol to RTB if their "Endurance Needed" exceeds their remaining endurance. Yes, it means that I am often cutting patrols short but it has pretty much ended the need for sub crews to raise sail to make it home. Every now and then further enemy activity endangers their fuel status and in areas where I have no alternative bases for them to put into I have assigned some Replenishment TFs with the slow AOs to send forward to assist those poor sub crews.

Submarines do not replenish fuel at sea, at least in the game they should not do so.

I believe in the old WitP subs could replenish at sea but that ended in AE. I think that's when it ended. Initially they could and now they can't.

As far as I know, and I don't know if a developer mentioned this, but up to and including 5 escorts will help the crippled ship. I do not know if up to 10 escorts will help 2 crippled ships in the same TF. It would not hurt if the escort TF was following an ASW TF, especially for high valued ships.

I would also believe that the ratings for the crippled ship are what is important for that ship, the commander of the TF would be important for the TF as a whole but not for the individual ships unless the TF commander is also a ship's captain.

In my game as well and AFAIK this is WAD. You have to offload some fuel at a base and have the sub stop to loadup. Or have them limp at 1 hex/day and accrue damage ...

Alfred specified that other ships can only help a cripple with firefighting. Once the fire is out, the captain and crew must manage the damage, but the other ships can screen against further attacks.
