Can a Python 5 intercept a GBU-24/B?

Post by Correcaminos »

Technically, a Python 5 launched from a SPYDER could intercept a GBU-24/B Paveway III in free fall, but in practice it’s very challenging:

The GBU-24 has no engine or heat source, only a ballistic trajectory.

The Python 5 relies on infrared signatures; detecting a small, cold bomb is difficult.

The SPYDER launched 4 Python missiles to intercept the GBU-24s and successfully intercepted 3 of them in free fall. Is this a bug?¿?

Anyway, I’ve repeated it several times, and it hasn’t happened again.

It's definitely feasible (modern IR seekers can easily detect even "freezers"; anything over zero-Kelvin is giving off some heat), but both the impact pH and the post-impact destruction evaluation should be a bit more challenging than what is shown in the log.

Can you post a pre-impact save so that we can have a look? Thanks.

Looking at the screenshot, the issues seems to be that the python does not take any hit to its original hit probability. Against a GBU 24/B, even if one accepts that it can be a valid target, one would expect a severe PH reduction

Ok thanks, here we go:

Moderate Middle Clouds 7-16k ft.

Falcon OECM flying about 60nm from the area, performing JAMMING on the radars in the attack zone, preventing the SPYDER from using radar-guided missiles while also blinding the rest of the FCR and AEW systems.

Flight 1156 maneuvering between the clouds at 7100ft heading to the next WP, where it will descend to 6800ft to establish visual contact with the SPYDER, activate the laser, and launch the GBU24s before climbing back up at the moment of impact.

I’d like to take this opportunity to ask you a question about the cloud conditions. According to the manual, under these cloud conditions, I understand that sooner or later a window of visibility with the target above 7000ft should appear. However, I’ve tried several times and can’t seem to get a line of sight while remaining within the clouds, which forces me to always descend to 6800ft and expose myself to the SPYDER's IR missiles. How would you handle this situation?
