TacOps

Post by Magpius »

Anyone else as stoked to see that TacOps still has a pulse?
It appears that Major H is still dabbling with code.
The game still plays as well on Win 11, as it did when it was released in 1994.
I mean, I was playing TacOps before, Strategic Command European Theatre and People's Tactics, and it's still good!
(just wanted to share!)

Have you got a link/reference to what Major H has been up to?

The most impressive aspect of his OPFOR AI was how it was doctrinally correct. Combat Recon Patrol in the lead (platoon-size), then Forward Security Element (company-size) about 3-5 km behind, and then the Main Force (battalion(-)) about 5-10 km behind. That plus a variable entry (north, center, south) was perfect. Having fought and played OPFOR at Hohenfels in the late 1980s, I really enjoyed playing TacOps in the 1990s once I found it. Sure would be nice to see an update of this excellent Cold War wargame, with better graphics and more than two elevation levels. Perchance to dream...

Take a look in the Grogheads forum threads.
The mere fact that the update patch has moved on from -AH to -AL is heart warming.
A graphics update seems unlikely, but it's just nice to know it is continuing on; much like your good work with EiANW.

Got it, thanks. "Partly as a vaguely ominous recurring dream, partly as therapy." I am fearful of maybe doing this myself 20 years from now with Empires in Arms.

Indeed.

I know TacOps as a BattleTech rule book. Are you talking about something else?

You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

It's a very old wargame.
