Aircraft Transport

Post by Rayfer »

Apart from using aircraft carriers, how do you get aircraft from the USA west coast ports to Pearl Harbor and other places? I read that AKV's are needed, but I have none. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks.

Any AK/xAK can carry a/c but as deck CARGO and thus upon unloading have to be serviced (assembled) by proper support troops.... it just takes more time........

On top of that you have to buy out restricted air units with pp's. (Political points)....GP

AKVs or any carrier - Air Transport TF - aircraft drained of fuel and slung in hold or tied on deck. Operational the day after it unloads.

AKs, xAKs - Air Transport TF - aircraft drained, partially disassembled (wings and props) and tied on deck. Operational with one day delay after unloading.

AKs, xAKs, xAKLs - Transport TF - aircraft drained, much disassembled and crated for storage in holds or on deck. After unloading, 3 days delay in reassembly and testing.

Forgot to add - if a CV type is being used for transport and it does not have 2X or more aircraft than it's max operational complement aboard, the transported aircraft can gas up and fly off to their in-range destination before the ship gets there. Not sure if there is an ops loss penalty for LBA units which have little training in navigation over water.

Just make sure that the task force is docked otherwise the air units will not load.

Use xAK types. My personal house rule is the following: use AKV's for 4-engine types that can't fly from off-map to on-map, everything else on xAK.

Why a house rule for that?

My own personal house rule, amongst others. To the best of my knowledge 4-engine bombers couldn't be disassembled (wings, tails) for transport like smaller aircraft, so to replicate this I use AKV's. This is especially relevant from Middle East and South African ports to on-map. I don't PBEM so there's no issue with other players, it's just one of my tweaks to enhance historical "feel." Other personal house rules include Alkan Highway, Soviet lend-lease air bridge, Ledo-Burma road construction and Panama Canal Zone SAG.

This is one quibble I have with the scenario designers. IMO, the vast majority of CBI aircraft should be arriving in Karachi, not Aden, as they flew into the theater rather than being transported by ship.
