Combat Report
December 7, 1941

A rather depressing Opening to the war is now in the books. We will see how it progresses over the next several days.

Pearl Harbor
The Japanese launch a monstrous strike of 191 Zero, 138 Val, and 179 Kate. Roughly 2/3 of the Zeros hit the AF at 9,000 Ft with one Daitai of Vals adding their weight to the AF assault. EVERYTHING else goes after the Port.

We have an excellent start where two midget subs penetrate the harbor and each place a single TT into the USS Tennessee. Rarely see one, let alone TWO, midgets get in so that was nice.

In this scenario there are eight BBs in Port but composition is different. The Maryland and West Virginia are on the West Coast getting their upgrade and are replaced by the sole South Dakota-Class BB--the Montana--as well as the sister ship to the California's--the Washington. Of the eight BBs four are heavily damaged (Oklahoma, Tennessee, Nevada, Washington) and the other four (Montana, California, Arizona, Pennsylvania) are beaten up with Heavy Fires. Looks like I only had two Daitai of Kates drop TTs.

On the BRIGHT side, the cruiser force is pounded. Flightdeck Cruiser (CLV) Patuxent absorbs 10 bombs and 4 TT and in sinking condition. The CAs (Louisville and San Francisco) are severally beaten up with Louisville in sinking condition. The Light Cruisers (St. Louis, Helena, and Honolulu) each take 2 or more bombs with St Louis in sinking condition after 5 bombs and 2 TT.

The interesting thing in this attack is the diversion of attackers to all sorts of other targets. No fewer then 12 DDs are hit with DD Helm sunk and 2-3 more in sinking condition. Five SS are hit. We see 2 DM, 4 DMS, 2 AV, 1 AE, and an ARD all hit. DM Gamble and a Yard Oiler are sunk outright.

The AFs are CRUSHED taking 150+ runway hits and seeing 12-15 planes destroyed and nearly everything else damaged.

Considering the weight of the attack, the results are disappointing but I really like the cruisers and support shipping beaten up pretty solidly. Considering the plans for taking the Isles, this works for me. I hope to bag ALL of what is beaten up...

The Phillippines
Clark is hit by 27 Zero and 81 Betty/Nell. CAP is present with 24 P-40 flying. Japan loses 1 Zero and 11 Bombers and clobber the AF destroying over a dozen on the ground and 12 in the air. Runway takes over 115 hits.

Iba has no CAP and is hit by 18 Zero and 9 Nells. Three P-40 destroyed and AF takes 28 hits.

Manila get the brunt of the effort with a Land-Based attack and two carrier force strikes. The Land-Based attack of 27 Zero and 81 Betty/Nell fight thru 34 P-40s to plaster the AF. One Zero and 8 bombers fall in exchange for 6 fighters, 4 DB, 4 PBY and another 11 P-40 shot down in the air. The carrier strikes come in with 46 Zero, 24 TB, and 69 FP then 25 Fighters and 19 TB. Attacks look pretty good with 6 Subs, 2 S-Boats, 4 TK, 3 ACM, 1 AO, 2 AKL, 3 AK, 3 AP, 1 AVD, 2 AS, 1 PG, 1 DD, and 1 AM hit. Two AP and a TK are sunk.

Cotabato, Mindanao has Paratroopers descend from over 50 Tinas capturing the AF. A Daitai of Zeros and 18 Vals immediately move in. A Fast TF carrying two Base Forces is on the way. A slower TF carrying a Brigade of infantry is also at sea.

Batan falls to a Base Force.

Malaya
The Japanese hit all the central and northern AFs to good effect. All Japanese Invasion TFs land at Kuantan. Allied bombers and TB attack and generally fight their way thru to the shipping. About 12 Zeros fly LRCAP with 12 Pete FP helping at low altitude.

These are the major events for the start of the war. Nothing too exciting but, more importantly, no disasters either.

From Indochina, nearly 100 transport planes haul a Base Force and Army Para unit to Patani in preparation for an air assault tomorrow.

OK. So CARDIV1 moves NE to get clear of air search. They will link-up with half the AOs. Hope that Gregg loses them in the action to come.

I combine CARDIV2 and 5 together and peel off a bombardment TF to hit PH. No escorts to bombard--just the 2 BC and 2 CB.

The carriers will fall back and cover the upcoming Midway landing.

Malaya Plans

As said earlier, everything lands at Kuantan. At Patani, nearly 100 Transports fly in an additional Base Force and an IJA Para unit.

Tomorrow will see Kuantan fall and 54 Japanese Topsy's will fly the Paras and drop them into Malacca to sever the enemy retreat while 9 Topsy's drop troops onto the base just north of Malacca. Four Sentai of bombers will hit the Allied troops at Malacca with 3 Fighter units flying LRCAP over the target.

I have a Brigade and two Base Forces landing at Kuching tomorrow. They are covered by four IJN BBs (Tosa, Kaga, Mutsu, and Nagato). The CVL TF that hit Manila on the 7th will move ASAP SW to get into a cover position for the Palembang attack.

So...Kuantan will fall on the 8th. The fastest AP/AKs will load troops to immediately grab Mersing then drive west to finish the work cutting the peninsula. Hidden in the TFs at Kuantan is a large Fast TF carrying an entire Brigade that will move to Mersing with the landing force then jump to Palembang and grab that base before the enemy can bring ANYTHING into the base.

By the 11th I hope to have Mersing AND Palembang.

I always get tired of claims of these Mods being just Japanese Fan Boy material. Soooooo...let us hit an interesting topic.

Earlier I covered the Japanese starting carrier strength within the Mod and said that the IJN has 2 CVL, 2 CAV, and 1 CVE for 144 extra planes compared to historical starting forces. Let us shift to the Allies...

Historically the Allies had Enterprise, Lexington, Saratoga, and Hermes for starting carrier strength.

In BTS--Air the Allies have those four PLUS CVL King's Mountain (36 planes), CV Indomitable (48 planes), 4 American CLV (20 planes: Charlotte, Patuxent, Anacostia, and Jacksonville), and 2 Allied CAV (15 planes: Melbourne and Wellington). These additional decks add 194 planes to the Allied OOB.

Seems pretty fair to me...

A very, VERY important note is that any form of CAV or CLV can be converted to a full carrier. The conversions take anywhere from 6-12 months pending on the class.

SoPac Plans

A diversion requires enough strength to make it believable. A number of TFs leave the Marshalls and Truk. All of them are heading for a rendezvous NE of Lunga. The various invasion forces carrying an Infantry Brigade, an SNLF Assault Division, 4 Base Forces, and 5 Engineer units plus LOTS of supply.

In this Mod, the traditional SNLF units, about 60 AV, have been replaced and consolidated into SNLF Brigades, about 190 AV, that can be divided down into three units each (A, B, C). Don't get hung up on the DIVISION moniker. They are Brigades but I had to make them Divisions so I could break them into three pieces. EDITOR strikes again! There are about 6 or 7 of these Assault Brigades at war start with 2-3 more that come as reinforcements. If you add the original deleted units together you get about the same exact AV. Combining them allows for assault PUNCH while they can then be broken up to provide more garrisons after the offensive portion of the war. Hope that makes sense??!!

ANYWAY...all these TFs will move to east of Lunga then head south as fast as possible to grab New Caledonia, Efate, Luganville, and Lunga-Tulagi. This blitzkrieg should occur before reinforcements can reach these targets and should FIXATE my opponent to look south.

While he is looking THAT direction...Dai Nippon moves east for Hawaii...

Who else is reading this? I know Ranger Joe, Chickenboy, Sierra Juliet, and Pax are but need to know who else.

Also would like to know what people would like to know or see within the AAR? Where do I need to provide details? What are you interested in??

I'm reading and appreciate the explanations of the mod, your grand strategy (bold and unusual!) and the maps that illustrate what the plans are.

WTF? I had about 20 GIFS selected and it showed them all as attachments but only posted 4?
Let's try again ... Dang - It lists all the icons I selected but only allows 4 to be placed inline. I deleted one from this batch to see if it would take the next on the list - nope.

+1

Maps are especially helpful with narrative for me. Like BB says, you've got a bold strategy (Surprise!!! ) and they help a lot with the vision of it. THANKS!!!
