Corps Destruction, ie reinforcement and refit

Post by gwgardner »

Early on in my experience with the game, I was dismayed that corps were being completely destroyed on all fronts. Seemed unrealistic.

However, in conjunction with the SC:WW1 production system, whereby many destroyed units can be brought back at reduced cost, the feature does seem realistic in an abstract way.

Now when I gnash my teeth, as my opponent destroys my corps, I think of it as withdrawing that unit from the front for a refit and reconstitution.

For this to be viable, I must ensure that I keep my units in good supply at all times:

5.6.8.2. Reforming Destroyed Units
When a land or air unit is destroyed with a supply level of at least 5, it can
be repurchased at 60% base cost with 1/2 the usual Production Delay. In
the Purchase List, these unit’s names will be annotated with an ‘*’.
Tip! Prioritize these for repurchase rather than other units of the
same type.
This represents the ability to repair equipment, call on cadres,
partially trained recruits and the wounded returning to the ranks

Yes, thats it. It seemed unrealistic to me at first in SC European Theater until I found this and realized its an abstraction. Theres no 'whole unit destroyed', or at least if its in good supply. Unsupplied units, on the other hand , are at full cost because your creating a whole unit....cooks, mules, wagons and all. [:D]

I think the problem is on Western front. The destruction of entire corps makes Western Front i too ‘fluid’ compared to the history. I suggest the ‘loss absorption’ that should be introduced exclusively on this front. Loss absorption means that, perhaps starting with the third loss of a corps during un attack on it in a turn, losses can be partially absorbed by adjacent friendly corps (reserves played an essential role in contain the initial breakthroughs). Likewise, a vacant hex cannot be occupied until the following turn (‘contested hex’). This allows the defender to decide whether to reoccupy it or leave it to the opponent. In this way, the mechanism of attrition battles typical of WW1 could be implemented on the Western Front.
