Naval advancements

Post by Bretwalda76 »

Naval advancements cannot be changed on existing vessels (I just realized it).

But then naval advancements seem pointless. I doubt that anyone build any naval units beside subs. At start there are no convoy escort DDs or CVs in the existing UK and USA fleet so there is absolutely no point in researching convoy escort advancement. Maybe if the DDs would cost less than 300 production or if the advancements could be changed?

Currently only worth putting points on Warships. Am I missing something?

There is no real reason to buy CVs or DDs in WarPlan (but yes in WP Pacific). Allies usually have enough of them at start. And the Warship advancement they use also has enough anti-sub improvement to do the job of protecting themselves vs subs.

But convoy escort advancement should still be researched as it also determines the effectiveness of escorts (the off-map units you can put in your convoys).

I did not know that! Do you know a ballpark figure how much difference they make? Is that the only off-map unit in the advancement table? Still, it would add versatility if naval advancements could be changed.

Do you distribute research advancement points or just max a few ones? Do you specialise countries?

Up to a point it is good to specialize countries, but you must choose some advancements over others, you can not spread out on everything. Not only are some not that useful, but been mediocre in everything and very good at nothing will not win a war.
I do not thing that naval units should be able to change advancement as it would represent rebuilding or extensively modifying whole ships. For air and land, it makes more sense as equipment is continuously replaced anyway, it would then just represents that the next batch of tanks or guns or planes is of a different type, or just in different proportions.

You can upgrade naval units but you cannot change advancements e.g. you cannot make a patrol group from 'warships' to 'convoy escort' the same way as you could change air superiority units from 'interceptors' to 'escort fighters' - at least I haven't figured it out.
