Is China Too Powerful in the 1941 Campaign?

Post by mdsmall »

I have only played the 1941 campaign once in MP mode, as the Allies, and my impression from that game was that China is much stronger in this campaign than it was in real life. Once China was able to pull level with Japan in Infantry Weapons (first at level 1, then at level 2), the large armies it can field and its fairly generous research capability made it a formidable enemy. Eventually, the Chinese armies were able to reconquer all the territory they had lost before 1941 pretty much on their own (given that the other three Allied powers were pushing Japan out of their respective theatres of war).

Now that this game has been out for well over a year, I would be interested in the views of veteran players of this game. Is China over-powered in this scenario, either in terms of historical performance, or in terms of overall game balance? Or does it just require different play by the Japanese side? Grateful for your views.

If playing as China against the AI, I can eventually overpower the Japanese. Playing as Japan against the AI, I can eventually overpower the Chinese although it's a bit harder given the Pacific distractions and the mountainous terrain going in that direction.

I do agree with a lot of what is said in that thread. The Chinese front is a difficult, muddled and unappealing war to have to try and replicate. You almost need more "nations" to represent the various uncooperative cliques. As it stands, I think the Nationalists and the Red Chinese collaborate far better in the game than they ever did historically.
