Assigning Leaders to Ground Units

This may be a simple question for those of you how haven't been away for 10+ years but ...

When assigning leaders for ground units, what is the difference between Assault and Combat?

Also, I'm guessing that Rear Area would be units like base forces behind the lines?

Assault means the person is highly aggressive and should be placed in a unit destined to attack, while combat means the guy is good in the line but falls short in terms of aggression and should be used in frontline defensive units.......both have good combat skills normally.
