[FIXED+WAD][1728.2] The satellite detects a stealth missile.

Post by erick33 »

While playing the scenario, I encountered a situation where the LRASM I launched was first detected by an enemy satellite, which allowed the enemy to intercept it. Upon review, I found that the satellite’s IR sensor was able to detect the LRASM. The attached scenario is designed to replicate a similar situation, though it is not identical to the one I faced. However, it also shows that the satellite’s IR sensor can detect stealth missiles.

Interesting
This is the reply from ChatGTP:

Detection is possible in principle if the IR sensor has very high sensitivity and favorable conditions (clear skies, missile not masked by terrain or sea clutter).
In practice, detecting low-observable cruise missiles from space is extremely challenging. That’s why most nations rely on a mix of:
Airborne early warning radar (AWACS, E-2D, etc.)
      Over-the-horizon radars
        Surface-based air defense radars
Patrol aircraft and ships rather than satellites alone.

We looked into this, and there were two aspects to it.

Initially, there was a bug int the IR look-down logics for clutter calculations. This has been fixed for the next update.

Even with that fix in place, the satellite was still able to detect the LRASMs. We discussed this internally. The consensus is.... there is no reason to believe it cannot do that.

It is a satellite at pretty low altitude, with a very powerful IR camera, looking down at faint but visible (particularly from the rear) IR targets against a dead-calm sea. Why not?

If you have any hard data that suggests that this class of satellites is, in fact, incapable of doing this, feel free to share it on the DB Github tracker: https://github.com/PygmalionOfCyprus/cm ... sts/issues

          Thanks.
