I'm playing the prior version of BTS Air vs 1Eyed Jack (Mike) as Allies. He was my first PBEM opponent way back when, We are in early Sept '43 and needless to say, the Allied war machine is rolling. :D
Except for the CVL that began the war around Mindano, no other Allied CV/CVL has been sunk vs 3 CV and 3 CVLs for Japan. Burma was where the Japanese Army went to die.

John is being his normally aggressive self with his opening here and there really is not much an Allied player can do to counter it. Save his CV/CVL/hybrids, hope for few sub sinkings in port (Manila), Dutch subs get lucky, and keep Force Z afloat. I think I'm still his economics minister, but years later my young Jedi is pretty much flying solo.

Forces continue to gather and unload at Paramushiro Jima.

CenPac
Kido Butai recombines with the Invasion Force to cover the final run in to Midway. Landing is tomorrow. There will be a 2 BB Bombardment and then 2 BB are included within the actual Invasion Force. Kido Butai will throw all its Vals and Kates against the troops in the afternoon. Want this place to fall on the FIRST TRY!

The Wake Invasion Force is still three days out. It has BC's embedded within it. If possible, Kido Butai will yo-yo back to add an aerial attack element to support this landing as well.

What started as three separate AO TFs are now combined into one carrying over 110,000 fuel. Should give us plenty of go-go juice for at least 3-4 weeks of operations.

AKE TFs are on the way to Midway and Kwajalein to keep the warships fully loaded for bear.

East of Hawaii, CarDiv5 makes its presence fully known when CL Raleigh, a PC, and 2 APs are crushed under two airstrikes. NICE! This element of Kido Mutai will now scoot towards Midway to link-up and then re-supply.

SoPac
The bait is TAKEN! The Aussie and New Zealand CAV Flightdeck cruisers appear off New Caledonia. These hybrids only carry 9 F and 6 TB each but they do have 8" guns. They score no hits but it does alert the Japanese to Allied movement and activity.

The Allies manage to land a unit at La Foa on New Caledonia. YUCK! Cannot be more then a Brigade or elements of one. Order a STF to sweep the hex as the SNLF Assault Brigade and an IJA Infantry Brigade are already moving towards La Foa from Koumac. Need to take that base back so he has to PREP for an assault landing here to reclaim...

All troops are now landed at Lunga, Luganville, Efate, and New Caledonia. Some supply is still being off-loaded. Purposely leave some ships at Koumac and Noumea to continue to draw the Allies to these targets...

Oops. Got to run errands with wife. Will do that then come back and do the rest of the map.

DEI
Lots of sinkings go on around the Dutch East Indies. Don't find Indomitable. HOPE I sank her! There are about 5 small STF operating from Palembang, south of Java, and in the East Dutch Indies.

The CVL TF is working towards Ambon. Need to replenish BADLY. The CVE TF moves SW from Babeldoap and works towards Kendari.

I use a Fast TF to land at Merak and take the base this turn. We are ashore at Java. Will move some Base Force troops and a full Brigade so we hold it.

Pontianak falls to a Brigade attack.

Malaya
Kloung FALLS. The peninsula is completely cut off now. The enemy is moving troops north and shipping is trying to get into Georgetown to lift off units. I have an Army Air HQ arriving that should fix this possible issue.

Three full ID are moving to Johore Bharu. The first will arrive tomorrow. Once all three are there we will crossover to Singers. Three ID SHOULD be enough.

December 16, 1941

OK. I have already let the cat out of the bag about major developments this turn so lets formally go through the areas.

NoPac
Nothing to report.

CenPac
Midway The Japanese Fleet closes with the atoll. Six American PT Boats spar with the Invasion Force and manage to hit one Japanese transport with a Torp. That transport sinks later in the day. Two PTs are destroyed for their efforts. Japanese SNLF troops move to their assault boats while the venerable Ise and Hyuga begin a bombardment of the atoll (doing 128 Cas). The Older Fuso and Yamashiro add their bombardment weight firing counter-battery at American CD positions (doing another 210 Cas). The atoll is a small fortress but the troops get ashore in good shape and heavily engage the Army troops defending the atoll. As the Japanese begin to get the upper hand, a massed strike from the Kido Butai arrives a little after noon. The strike of 66 Zero, 64 Val, and 80 Kate PLASTER army positions (doing 470 Cas) and open the way for the airstrip to fall. With no hope at all, the Army commander surrenders at sunset and 3,225 Americans become POWs.

The SNLF Assault Brigade only loses 188 men in launching their 34-1 assault. FANTASTIC! Need them intact for the upcoming landings.

ORDERS:
1. KB moves west again to cover the upcoming Wake Assault. They will also fuel from the AOs.
2. The 2nd SNLF Brigade will split up and take all the dot bases in the area through Laysen.
3. The support TF, carrying an Air Flotilla, 2 Base Forces, and 4 Engineering units moves in to begin unloading tomorrow or the days after.
4. Disband the four old BB for a day at Midway. Will reform them and send them to Truk to reload and come back. A lot of steaming but have to at this point.

Wake This base is struck by 30+ Betty from the Marshalls. The Wake Invasion Force is approaching from the west and will land in two days.

SoPac
As detailed earlier, the US Pacific Fleet Scouting Force arrives! At least 2 CV, 1 CVL, and 2 Flightdeck Cruisers appear in TFs between Lunga and Luganville and east of Luganville. The NZ and Aussie Flightdeck Cruisers are just off of Noumea. Strikes at Japanese shipping are flown in both the morning and afternoon. All things being equal, the losses are fairly small. Japan loses CL Oi, 3 AK, and an AP. Damage is done to four other CLs and 2 AK.

With the exception of Noumea, all troops and supplies have been unloaded at this point. Order all Japanese TFs to disperse and RUN LIKE HELL! Send them in every direction but south. This should keep the enemy occupied for a few days and buy time for Japan's first serious opening moves against Hawaii.

Philippimes
Luzon--All of Northern Luzon is Japanese. Hopefully, the enemy doesn't figure out that there is only 1 ID and a single Brigade up here... Troops land and take Naga this day. An ID now ill begin driving north. There are LOTS of support elements but this is all Japan is committing to Luzon until Mindanao is gone.

Mindanao--There are now 3 ID and a Brigade in Mindanao chewing it up.

Malaya
The first of three Japanese ID arrives at Johore Bharu. There are ten Allied units there though seven of them were just driven back from Kloung. We will wait to attack until the another ID arrives in the hex. Once all three ID are at Johore, we will crossover and take Singers.

DEI
Torpedo carrying Betty and Nell now fly out of Palembang and ships begin to seriously sink! Have moved two 36 plane Daitai as well as a large Zero Daitai here. Two smaller Kate Chutai fly from here as well.

The two small carrier TFs (1 CVL, 2 CAV, and 3 CVE) are working on a meet-up near Kendari. MUST reprovision the CVL and CAVs! They have only a few sorties left.

In two days, Ambon will fall to an assault. An Air HQ will land immediately after that and I will move a Betty Daitai and Zeros there.

Miri falls to a small Infantry unit and Base Force.

Notes:
In three days we will begin loading up the serious beefcake of the Hawaii Operation. We will bring 16th Army, 2 ID, 2 Brigades, 2 Air Flotilla, 4 Base Forces, and some Engineers east...

My Noble Economics Minister never, EVER throws anything away! In my computer shuffles, I had lost the magnificent work SuluSea had done for our Mods. He made artwork for both sides, Allies and Japanese, here is one example:

That first set of colourful painting of IJN ships looks like the boxtop art from Tamiya and Hasegawa ship models. All the company logos and stuff can easily be cropped off. Still a nice collection and arrangement of the art.

CenPac
Midway fell on the 16th. Several TFs headed there to unload and OVERLOAD the atoll.

Kido Butai (4 CV and 2 CVL) move west to cover the incoming Wake landing.

Wake Island
The 19th sees a similar set of actions that occurred with Midway on the 16th. Six American PTs get into the Invasion force and sink an AK (150 Cas (11 Squads) while losing one of their own. The BC Bombardment Force moves in and sinks another PT, opens fire and does 232 Cas. The Invasion Force closes the beaches and begins unloading taking 49 Cas and inflicting another 36 on the Marine defenders. While unloading an afternoon strike by Kido Butai (43 Zero, 74 Val and 92 Kate) add another 100 casualties.

The Marines are made a far stronger stuff then the Army at Midway. The initial assault gets ashore but only scores a 1-2 against Forts 3. Losses are not bad with 152 Japanese for 291 American. Will rest the 20th, hit with KB, and then assault again on the 21st. This should take the base.

East of Hawaii
CarDiv1 got spotted from Hawaii on the 16th and 17th. After being spotted, Japan gets all tricksy and darts back toward the West Coast. The Japanese I-Boat Patrol line (about 5-6 hexes from the West Coast) get several American TFs moving over it going west and southwest.

The 19th is GOLDEN! Air Search picks up enemy 4-5 TFs and the carriers ordered into the wind. A total of five strikes fly during the day and they sink 10 AK, 4 PC, 1 AO, and 1 TK. Damage is done to another 8-9 AK, 2 TK, and an AP. American losses amount to these ships and a significant number of troops (194 Cas--42 Squads, 71 Guns, and 32 Vehicles). NICE! We shall go after them again. Kaga's Kate carried TT on the 19th, shift them to bombs and make Akagi's Kate carry TT for the 20th.

SoPac

The theme for these three days is RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

The Scouting Force spreads itself out (Hmmmm...making it vulnerable???) and tries to catch fleeing Japanese shipping. Losses to mount up over the three days:

17th--2 PB and 4 AK
18th--2 PB, 3 AK, and CL Furutaka
19th--2 AK, 2 DD and CL KItakami

Most Tfs are now approaching Truk and Kwajalein. Shift air units around to see if we can get a free shot at a single American CV/CVL/CLV TF. Be nice to punch a hole in the side of something valuable...

The enemy lands a second unit (unknown) at LaFoa. Have 3 DD hidden at Koumac and will try to make sure nothing else lands tomorrow. Two Japanese Brigades will reach the LaFoa hex in two days.

Lunga is almost AF-1. When that happens, I will shift planes there to then hop down to Noumea and see if we can get a little lucky...

Though stressful, these units are doing there job. The enemy is transfixed on New Caledonia and Japanese shipping. It keeps them AWAY from Hawaii. We shall see if this works or not.

DEI

This area has become expectantly BLOODY.

Palembang is flying 45 Zero and 72 Betty/Nell. I can only range them out to 14 Hexes. I have CVL and CVE in the east near Ambon. This leaves the center near Soerabaja fairly devoid of Japanese airpower. As a serious oversight, this costs me over the three day period.

The Asiatic Fleet and Dutch Navy have combined into several powerful TFs and punished two Japanese smaller STF. Day-by-Day:

17th--4 Japanese STF account for CL DRagon, 3 AK, 1 AM, 1 AG, 1 YP, 1 PG, 1 ML, 1 AP, 1 AO, and 1 TK. Lose 3 (of 5) DD to an Asiatic Fleet TF of 2 CA, 2 CL, and 7 DD
18th--Spot the enemy TFs and TRY to get out of there!
19th--Sink: 6 AP, 1 PC, and 1 TK. ACTION: 3 CA 4 DD versus two Dutch BB, 3 CL, 5 DD. LOSE CA's Haguro and Myoko plus 1 DD

Hate losing CAs for ANY reason!

Japanese Airpower:

17th--2 ARD and an AMc sunk
18th--3 TK, 2 AVP, 2 AM, 2 AK, 2 AP, 1 KV, 1 AG, 1 AKL, and 1 CM
19th--3 AP, 2 AMc, 3 AK with GOOD NEWS both BB Prins Willem and Prins Hendrik taking a single TT each.

Land at Ambon on the 19th and will take it tomorrow.

Also have a TF about to land and take Kendari. An Air HQ follows the Kendari landing. Once we have that, I will move 36 Zero and 45 Betty/Nell their and FINISH the Allied attempt at a stand...
