If the fighter units on Hiryu lose aircraft, don't necessarily replace them so you can put other air units such as bombers on them if you so desire. You can transfer them to other carriers and keep their flight training going, even if the carriers are in a shipyard.
NICE!
I know that this will have to happen because if we do well again tomorrow, I will NEED Hiryu's TT! I really, REALLY LIKE training up other carrier capable aircraft to carrier trained whenever possible. Provides a bunch of flexibility. Sometimes it can be done quickly and at other times it takes forever.
Anyone know what it takes to convert capable to trained???

Three months (IIRC) aboard a carrier moves them from capable to trained. That time can be interrupted with no loss of the time already spent on the carrier, so you can land the planes at an airfield for rapid repairs and then reload them after.

I should have added that "Carrier Trained" only seems to make the Ops losses a bit less for the air unit. I take it to mean they are more skilled at landing but get no boost to combat skills.

No turns for the next 4-5 days. The Cochran Clan plus others are headed up to the cabin for 2nd Rifle Season in Colorado. The boys and friends have two deer and two elk tags. We're hoping that they shoot straight and do well. Will be back on Tuesday.

I wish them well and even more importantly, safe hunting.

Knowing your opponent from the last game. his aggressive reaction around New Caledonia is not a great surprise. Your advances in DEI under an umbrella of Betty/Nell means my young Jedi has learned his lessons well.
I-boats placement suggestions - Christmas Island, Pago Pago, Tahiti, Aukland, Suva in that order if you have any you can re-route.

Elk jerky, my FAVORITE!!!
PS: a bow hunter myself .... well, used to be. Haven't pulled one in a while ... not really up to +20 miles of hiking any more (not to mention +100lb packs) .... used to hunt up around New York peak if you know that area .... got caught up there one July, 6ft of snow, 3 days before we got out ....
The hunting trip went well. Both of the boys got their first deer but the adults managed to NOT get an elk. Had chances but did not score. My eldest was floating when he came in with the news that he got his first deer. He did all the work on the carcass and took it to be processed and is even PAYING for it. Very exciting.
Paula and I held the front deck down very well! Got six beautiful inches of snow on Sunday morning and had no issues getting home over Battle Pass.
Have only gotten one turn done with Gregg since getting back Tuesday night. Will Post more on that in a bit!
Happy All Hallows Eve!

My John is thinking about trying Bow Hunting. I recommended try muzzleloaders but he wants to go fully primitive.

Action continues to two major areas. The CVTF at the NW corner of Australia and area around New Caledonia. Very productive turn!

I have the freshly completed CVL Shoho coming from Japan to meet CVL Zuiho who is departing Kwajalein. They will rendezvous at Kure Isle and then combine with the slowly returning CarDiv1. Once fueled, these 2 CV and 3 CVL will cover the opening landings in the Hawaiian Isles.
The troops from Japan (2 ID, 2 Brigade, and 6 other units) are approaching Wake. Once there, they will shuffle a bit and begin to move east.
SoPac New Caledonia
The Kido Butai (4 CV and 1 CVL) continue to pound Allied shipping this day. The carriers pull back slightly towards Koumac where a small BC TF (2 BC, 1 CA, 3 DD) meet and are blended into the escorts protecting the carriers. The day sees four strikes launched:
10Z 6 K sink DD Ellet
22Z 12 V sink an AM at LaFoa
58Z 35 V CRUSH CA's Northampton (12B) and Salt Lake City (9B)
10Z 24 K sink 2 AP
Reinforcements will begin landing in 2 days. I now have nearly 20,000 Allied troops cut off at LaFoa. Redirect an Army Inf Brigade to this area to add some more punch to the ground side. Reinforcements about to land include two big Special Base Forces, an Air Flotilla, and 3 Engineer units. This will secure Koumac and Noumea and bring aircraft to can HARM the Allies!
Lunga goes to Sz-2 AF and it has 54 Betty and 36 Zero waiting for that Air Flotilla to land.
KB, with its added escort, moves due south to hunt Allied warships and shipping.
Australia
As mentioned earlier, I detach 1 CA and 5 DD from the carrier screen to go after enemy shipping. This is done spectacularly in sinking three TFs that included 1 AS, 1 AVP, 5 AMc, 1 CM, 1 HDML, 1 PB, 1 AGP and severely damage CL Java and a large AP.
The CVL, 2 CAV, and 3 CVE pound the fleeing survivors during the day sinking: CL Java, CL Tromp, an APA, an AG, an AM, an AMc, and 3 AK.
Order the STF to rejoin the CTF and bring the TF south to about Geraldton for a last day of operations.

Think that is a good days work. Over two dozen ships including 2 CA and 2 CL adds nicely to the haul.
We should be able to stabilize things in New Caledonia and then work for a massed surrender of ANZAC and American troops there. Should be a very nice perk to a 'diversionary' operation!

GAME TIP FOR NEW JAPANESE PLAYERS: One never, as Japan, has enough support ships. One TURN ONE I always convert about 12-18 AKs into AKE, AD, AS, and AR. The AR conversions take a lot of time but the others are somewhat quick. If you don't do it immediately, it can really be a pain to get those ships back to Japan for conversion. They can get lost in the hustle and bustle of the opening of operations.
As the perimeter expands, these ships become invaluable to replenishment. Also...don't forget to use your Naval HQs to add to a Port's ability to handle larger warship's needs. This is why assaulting Hawaii is tough. I need a Port to resupply my BBs...
It is now December 29th and my first AKE conversions are moving out to Midway, Kwajalein, and Tulagi...
What do other experienced Japanese players do/recommend in this arena?

Should note economically that I have begun a slow expansion of aircraft building, engine production, and limited naval shipyard add-ons. Have to be careful here since Japan starts with such a reduced stockpile of supply, fuel, and oil.
On that note, next turn (12-29-41) I have nearly 30 Tankers arriving at Palembang to begin loading their first fuel and oil to take home. One cannot begin too early and since Singers is about to fall, there is little danger in beginning the fuel/oil runs NOW!
Additionally, I am about to load a large AK convoy with supply to begin repairing the non-expanded oil/fuel at Miri/Brunei. Think we'll start with 100,000 and repair both at the same rate...
Does anyone have a thought on which is more important to repair? Oil or Fuel???

Repair the oil first, you can ship that to refineries plus you have excess refining capacity. Also, if you are low on supplies that saves supplies in the short term. If you are playing a longer game, then those supplies saved can be quite useful. You may not even want to repair the refineries if they don't produce supplies.
Also, if Palembang is overstocked on fuel, turn off the refineries so there is no more fuel wasted. Wait until the fuel is not oversupplied before you turn the refineries back on. Also, your AOs can "instant load" fuel while they are disbanded in port. It takes OPs points but that can help to reduce the stockpiles. When loading fuel into cargo holds (if allowed) then Naval Support (per Alfred) will help load the fuel because it is considered cargo and not bulk liquid.
You can also load both oil and fuel in the same hold and it will magically unload separated!
