New expansion

Post by Peter Fisla »

Hi All,

Jorgen and I just had a quick chat on the subject of the new upcoming game expansion. The focus of the expansion will a mixture of Eastern Front and Western Front, kind of a wrap-up to the game. We plan to do one campaign in Stalingrad, one additional campaign in the area of the Battle of the Bulge and few scenarios around both of these campaigns. That's all I have, at this point to share.

Cheers...

Awesome! Looking forward to it!

Since it might be the end, how about besides the Eastern Front and Western Front you add in something from the MTO?

Three front ending? lol

Hi All,

I don't have a release date yet, as we have started working on the expansion few weeks ago...

I'm still here too! I have not played the game in quite a while but I would definitely fire it up again for a new expansion.

I'm playing it again, because to me. It is still one of the best WW2 games.

More contents is always good news, the new expansion is going on my wishlist! I hope you can leave the game's executable in a really polished state, too (while putting your health and family first, that is).

As you might have gathered from my mod archival efforts, I'm very sensitive to the topic of video game preservation. May I suggest the idea of a open-source code release, once you're done with the game? It would allow the community to keep your game alive indefinitely as new hardware and OSs come up. What you've coded is unique and your 12+ years of effort deserve to be preserved; plus people could introduce convenience features that you didn't have the time to code up or maintain, such as scaling.

On the commercial side of things, I think that the game getting community updates would be interesting for your publisher as well, as an active community means forum activity, which means people buying up the remaining DLC, getting notifications of new game releases and cross over to other games' forums, and so forth.

And before you say the code is a mess, clean game code is a myth ;) - if the code is clean, it's an abstract engine or a prototype not a real-world game. The original Rogue's code was an absolute spaghetti, and that doesn't prevent to still make ports based on it to this day with bugfixes and an improve UI, etc.

If you like the idea (and your business deal with Matrix/Slitherine doesn't prevent it), I could suggest open-source licenses to match the rules you wanna set for what people can do with the source.
