New here. Just bought the game

Post by GaryChildress »

Just bought TOAW IV and am looking around at different scenarios. I DL'd the Matrix Vanilla version and there was some kind of issue with the scenario folder that wouldn't let me open it. So I got the Steam key and switched to the Steam version which seems to be working OK. Maybe an update problem?

There seem to be a lot of scenarios out there, even multiple versions of the same battles. My question is a little odd but is there a battle from the 2nd World War that has not had a TAOW scenario created for it? I'd kind of like to learn how to create a user created scenario, but I'd rather not do a battle that's already been done. Are there any battles that haven't been recreated? Also, what's the smallest level a scenario can be? Can a battle be created where each counter represents a platoon or company?

Also, is it possible to make a grand strategy scenario such as "WW II in Europe" so that a player can fight WW2 from the beginning completely hypothetically using the initial OOBs for Germany, Britain, France, etc., and using counters that represent corps or armies, where the player can choose what countries to invade first?

Welcome! Yes, the early versions of TOAW-IV had a bug with the scenario folder selection. For the Matrix version, you need to update to the latest version. The Steam version is automatically at the latest version, so avoids that issue.

Nothing comes to mind, but I'm sure if you crank the focus small enough some topic will be fresh. Maybe a scenario on clearing out the Scheldt Estuary? Unit sizes can be as small as platoons. However, if you drop the hex scale small enough for such units, then you usually have to handle direct-fire ranges, which TOAW is not designed for. Still hasn't stopped designers from trying though.

There are such scenarios existing now. Of course, there are strategic issues that TOAW-IV lacks facility for, such as: Contested sea lanes, production, strategic bombing, etc. Again, still hasn't stopped designers from trying to kluge their way through them.

Not to say that you could find any of these if you look long enough, but I haven't come across them yet:

The Battle of Brody 1941
Operation Suvorov - Aug-Oct 1943
Operation Mars
Operation Spring Awakening
Kerch–Eltigen Operation and/or Manstein in Kerch 11-41 to 5-42
Operation Tannenbaum/Case Schwies/Case Switzerland
The Dodecanese campaign
Battle of Radzymin (1944)
Warsaw Uprising, 1944

I would say yes because even I have a couple different versions of such a thing. However, there are issues and therefore I've never released any of them to the public. OOB's are not an issue because units can 'upgrade' as time progresses. Counters can represent anything [I've got divisional and corps level versions].

What countries to invade first isn't as flexible as we would like because there are only two sides [no neutrals] and two exclusion zones [so only four separate 'zones' on map].

For fun, may I ask, how is it that someone as learned and wise as you is just now procuring TOAW IV, eight years after its' initial release?

Plenty of battles. Many scenarios were based on popular games of years past. If one gets past those topics, yeah, plenty to be yet simulated. Not sure if TOAW has a good Battle for Budapest 1944-45 scenario. That could be an idea.

What "Curtis" said about small unit echelons. Direct fire combat in hexes of less than 2 kilometer size would not be well represented, and time scales of platoon / company combat could only sort of be represented. Better done with 5 kilometer+ hexes and units of battalion size and above.

One could set up a list of events checking to see if a particular hex is entered and who entered it, thus triggering a deployment of units for a country that has just been "invaded". Would work so-so as the event's effects would not engage until the other player's turn, meaning the initial invading power would have a free run until the invaded country's army deploys. Sure, the army of that country can be deployed as part of scenario start, but that means the side it is fighting on is already determined.

One bit of advice. If you make a scenario, start small the first time. It is tempting to do big projects, but cut your teeth on a small one first.

Regards--

From your contributions to ATG you are probably more known for graphic mods rather than scenario design. Along with new scenarios, I’m interested to see what kind of graphics magic you might perform on TOAW.
