Scenario 17 - Dueling newbies long descent into the maelstrom

Post by jeffs »

[:)]
USN-IJN 100%
sub doctrine on (at the desire of the IJN)
damage control on
variable reinforcements

IJN commander - Sharman (he`s Japanese and likes general Sherman)
experience...unknown...but my guess is that he has some PBEM expereience...

USN commander....Hanbei (for those interested in Japanese history Hanbei was one of Hideyoshi`s first generals) ...American with a stunning 15 day PBEM history..

USN strategy....
got me....stay alive...I tend to be a bit aggressive with PM...
I usually airlift in another inf reg and base force...I figure if I can get the defense up quickly , often the first wave of APs for Buna, Lae and GG can be mashed...P-39s and 400s can not hit a warship worth a lick, but 500 lb bombs can kill transports...So abuse it well...

We have finished the 2nd turn...Not much...About all I see is the shortland transports off for Lunga..I have 2 subs hoping to cause pain...

He has been raiding Buna with planes....I am not sure why...I guess for experience...Given these are the good Betty`s/Nells I am not sure the purpose...I have decided against the aggressive move of airlifting troops to Buna...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/02/42

Weather: Overcast

Air attack on Buna , at 12,38

Japanese aircraft
G3M Nell x 34
G4M1 Betty x 11

no losses

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 1

Attacking Level Bombers:
3 x G3M Nell at 6000 feet
14 x G3M Nell at 20000 feet
11 x G4M1 Betty at 20000 feet
14 x G3M Nell at 6000 feet
3 x G3M Nell at 20000 feet

I messed up...I should have scheduled a LRCAP over Buna for next day...Maybe catch a bunch unguarded...Oh, well...Minor oversight.

The only other thing to mention is that the F4s that show up on turn 2 have loaded up on the Yorktown....With 50 F4s I find (at least vs IA) that the US has the advantage vs 2 CVs (but not against a combo of 2cvs and a cve)...The obvious key is not to be foolish and get caught with carriers about the infamous PM-GG line. Well off to support a bunch of supply off to PM...And maybe get into a tussle...

Well, the dreaded S boats start the pain.

Not much else to report...It looks like a DD/CL FT will take Buna...Not much else...
The Lunga? bound TR group disappeared.....

Well still only turn 4....

5/4 has zero combat....

However, 5/5 looks to be potentially big....That said, a mistake is causing me worry...
I left the PBY at Cairns to regain full strength...A mistake as my info is decent, but incomplete...4 hexes outside of Buna there is a CV group...But all I see is a CV and DD....I find a decent amount of commanders keep the CVE seperate....

Anyway, 4 hexes from Lae is TR group and 2 hexes from GG is another TR.....I have my counterattacks ready....But it is of significant importance of what his CV plan is (anyway, my CVs are in don`t react mode so I will not be drawn into the line of death...But we could have some long distance sparring......

[&o]
A fairly action filled turn that was slightly disappointing....Nothing shocking though..

1. He took Lunga no surprise
2. He landed on GG (I just mined, but he has an MSW with him I think)
3. His CV whereabouts are unknown (but seem to be around somewhere as my TRs scattered..
4. 3 Hexes from Buna is a small 3-4 ship TR and 2 hexes behind it seems to be a large
FT with a ton of CLs/DDs...

My 150+ plans at PM ignore the butt naked transports and attack the warships...Stupid move...Given they are at the end of their range and half trained, the attacks are fairly disappointing....We lose a few planes, the IJN needs to repair a DD and CL....

Next turn my CVs can threaten a Buna landing or GG....The only reason I am stick around is the 3rd fighter roup now gives me just under 60 fighter for CAP....
He had his TRs on patrol/do not return and I was not snooped...So he probably does not realize where my CVs are.......I hope[&o]

First counterattack...

Post by jeffs »

The IJN commander aggressively puts a small TR fleet into GG, a medium into Buna,
in addition, another 6 DDs are in Buna as well....2 CVs are a 120 miles to the rear...

USN goes on the attack...Lex/York stay 120 miles south of PM and get off an attack...4 IJN DDs are now reefs....Subs at lunga dispatch an AP and MSW and a previously hurt AP succumbs...Overall quite good....

That said, the Lex and Yorkie are retiring, but leaving 2 fighter squads in PM for 2-3 to cover supply runs...I expect to lose about 30% of those planes anyway, but hope to do decent damage to the carrier planes...

I was hoping to create more pain, but as I saw a CV fleet headed out, I pulled my CV fleet away from the PM area, but flew in (for only a couple of rounds) some F4 into PM.
Still some targets, but my pilots are exhausted..They are far from being called experienced...

Well I learn a lesson...At this point, US LBA can not take on warships...An attack on a DD group leads to a bunch of flak casualties (OK they were flying at 1000 to 2000 feet). However, another AP and DD are terminated....

Off of GG there is a group of 5 CA and 2 DD....My guess is a bombardment of PM is on the books, but there is a small chance it is an FT run to GG. (rather annoyed as my cairns based B-17s are supposed to bomb GG but do not bother to fly....0 Fatigue and 70s morale...)...

He takes buna...No surprise, but he does have an engineer unit there.....In a few turns (post CA raid) I think I will need to chastise them.

Speaking of the CA raid, will move the CV group over to try and hit them on their return leg.

Good news ,but no great news.....

He does make a run at PM...Damage is minor....My DBs do get their attack, but unfortunately at long range (those IJN CAs do move so quickly)...

None of his CAs appear in danger of sinking, but I would think a couple of them should be headed to Truk...Given 5 of his DDs are gone, this should cut down some of his aggression for the next couple of weeks...

I think I will head the CVs back to port.....Morale is a bit low and his AA actually caused some pain...Might as well rest a few days and get back to strength....

Also, it seems he deplained hsi CVs and Rabual is a death center....77 zeros hit PM....
P-40s can do only so much...
