prioritising between Fox2 and Fox3

Post by Knightpawn »

I have the following questions (for anyone having the time to answer)

- How does an a/c chooses what to shoot first if both Fox -2 and Fox 3 shots are within engagement parameters?
- [other than manual fire] Can I somehow set up to choose Fox-2 over Fox-3 when both shots are available (if this is not the default case).

I think this will first depend on the doctrine weapon RTB setting. If it is set to only allow engagements with BVR weapons, it may not use the WVR missiles at all.

If it is allowed to use all types of weapons one way or another, it will probably automatically end up using all of its Fox-3 missiles before ever actually getting within Fox-2 range.

But if it somehow gets into a situation where it can use either missile anyways, you can configure it to only use Fox-2s over Fox-3s by adjusting the WRA to disallow use of Fox-3s on a certain target type, and allowing Fox-2s to be used on that target type. Example: Set the WRA of an F-16 to only use Fox-3s on 3rd gen and higher fighters (MiG-23 or MiG-29), while allowing the Fox-2s to hit any target (thus making the plane more likely to use Fox-2s on, say, a MiG-21 or MiG-19).

If you want it to eventually use both, I don't think that is possible without using Lua, although if the Fox-3s are still allowed to be fired in self-defense against the target it might use them after having engaged with Fox-2s even if it is otherwise not allowed to use Fox-3s against that type of target (because, I assume, if it has run out of Fox-2s the target will still be alive and thus attempt to keep attacking the player unit, thus triggering self-defense fire). The self-defense fire range will just need to be set very low for the Fox-2-class target.

Thanks.
(still trying to understand how does "Self Defense" really works in relation to enemy planes. Is it just that the target gets super priority if within the designated range, or does it also need to be perceived as "threat" (for example my plane being within its weapons envelop AND within the said range)

For self defense settings the enemy unit just needs to be within the self defense range set in WRA.
