Minefield Question

Post by Dereck »

At Canton Island I have a defensive minefield of 228 mines. Yet it seems the Japanese AI can attack the task force I have anchored there without going through the minefield or at least without suffering any damage.

Is there something I'm doing wrong when I laid the minefield (mine laying TF sent to island to lay the mines) or does the game consider ships anchored at the base to be outside of the defensive minefield?

Thanks

Minefields work against enemy invading your base or docking/moving into their own base.

Enemy Surface Combat TF can engage your ships from outside your minefield, it is considered to be quite close to port.

Bigger numbers seem to help. I have a few minefields of 500, 700 and above that routinely damage Japanese surface ships which prowl through the area at night. Usually, destroyers but sometimes cruisers take the mine hit. If sufficiently damaged my land-based dive-bombers can often catch them in the daylight and deliver the coup de grace.

My experience, too, the more the merrier... 200 is a little on the thin side.

A hex is 40nm across, in area that's 1385.6 nm².

In my recent AI games I have considerably increased mine production to be useful. Not excessively so, though.

In stock game, after original pool is used, your minelayers are mostly useless.

Some CM's are good for ASW.

Related question but when conducting an amphibious landing against a base suspected of hosting a minefield, will minesweeping vessels (e.g. DMS) accompanying the bombardment TF be effective against mines or do you need a standalone minesweeping TF to come in first? Seems like the timing would get complicated coordinating the arrival of all the various TFs that way.

You can imbed DMSs in the bombardment TF. They will sometimes find mines to clear and chances of the big ships hitting mines are greatly reduced.

I always include them (if available) in my amphibious TFs conducting the initial invasions.

DMS and faster AMs are pretty good to have in Amphibious TF. As bonus, some have pretty good ASw weaponry.
