Running TOAW III in Win 11?

Post by Artaud »

Has anyone been able to run TOAW III in Windows 11? I used to play the game on my old Win 10 computer. In January I bought a Win 11 machine, and finally got around to loading TOAW III onto it. I've tried every compatibility configuration, but the game only shows the introductions screen. When I click "play" it just closes.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I don't have a W10 machine, and I don't have TOAW III on my W11 machine, but I can offer this one possibility.

Check to see if you might have the file highlighted below. If I remember correctly, this is a file that Ralph created for older machines. It might have been for IV, but it could have been for III also, I can't remember exactly.

I have TOAW 3 and 4 both running OK on Windows 10, 11 and 11 Pro.

I am only an occasional player and not of big scenarios.

Try downloading the installer from the Matrix "My Page" if the old CD doesn't work although I have done both with no problems.

I run all of my old games on this. Even very old ones like Stars!.

If duct tape doesn't fix it then you are not using enough duct tape.

Thank you for your reply. I downloaded the "TOAWIII-Remaster Installer-v3.4.1.9" and used that instead of my CD to install the game. It runs, but many text fields are white. For example, the scenario descriptions and the pop up that shows combat results are white and therefore unreadable. The buttons that you click to select a scenario are white. The icons to the right of the game map are also white. You can see a description of what they are if you hover the mouse over them, but that's a very clumsy way to play.

How frustrating. I have spent hours trying to get some programs to work.

There are some threads on the forums for issues with getting some programs - such as John Tillers Campaign Series; and World War One Gold to work on Windows 11. It seems that some PCs do not come with as many fonts, or drivers as others. Also a thing called D3DRM.dll is sometimes missing.

On one occasion I found that installing another old game actually installed some of the missing drivers (direct x something or other) and the previously troublesome game suddenly worked.

I have just accepted that some games require me to use old computers.

I wish I had the space to set up multiple computers. But also, at my age I wonder if it's really worth it to spend hours and hours trying to get old games to work. It's frustrating, and I just don't need more frustration in my life.

A year ago I was using a Win 10 computer, and TOAW III ran fine. So did Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich. In early January we bought this Win 11 machine. I thought, "Well, I'm retired now, and I will finally have time to play more games. And, being elderly, this will probably be my last computer."

Thanks, Microsoft!

Again. There are programs like the one I mentioned above that allow you to run old games without having multiple computers.

Thank you. I will look into the one you mentioned. But I have not done so yet, because I never click on links posted in internet forums. Sorry. I learned that lesson years ago, the hard way.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I had to 'fix' someone's computer because they clicked on just anything. ;)
