The unit will use its current order state to determine whether it moves. So, holds will stay longer, and screens will move when threatened or when a visible enemy enters the standoff range.

I was very confused by the "Stance only", maybe it should have been called "Use Stance" or "Based on Stance"

It also threw me a bit at first, being accustomed to "Never" in Southern Storm. But it does make sense once you realize it is referring to the prior section in the SOP Manager.

Thanks, I had been wondering about this too. However, your explanation tells us what, but not how s, to me, it is difficult to determine when to use this.

Do or Die used to mean the unit will stay in the fight and take casualties. But how does "Stance Only" change this, how much more in the fight can one stay if it going to already do or die? Same goes for the other settings such as "after taking and direct fire losses." How does "Stance Only" modify that? Taking a loss is taking a loss.

I'm not getting it.

This game is like a great looking shiny brand new vehicle, but under the hood the engine is broken.

What is so broken about the game? Are there some bugs, yes. We are working on those. There are a few things like Stance, that we need to explain better to help players understand the functionality of the mechanics.

The original question nor the discussion stated that, nor implied, that the game was broken. It works quite well.

I'm curious what you mean. Would you mind elaborating? I'm relatively new to wargaming so I don't have many other games to compare this game to nor any real-life military experience to compare it to either. However, to me it seems like a polished game that nicely marries complexity to accessibility. I'll likely be playing it for years to come. I also see on reddit that it's widely praised as a new standard in Cold War hex and counter computer wargames.

Most games of this scale have bugs upon release but the devs seem active in addressing them as they emerge.

Same thing here. I'm relatively new to wargaming and FCSS was my first intro into "hardcore" wargames (or maybe HoI3 was... but then it was like 15y ago). I'm quite surprised at how well FC Cold War bridges the "hardcore wargaming" with accessibility and realism. Yes, there are bugs, not game breaking for now though. And definitely there are things that could be explained better, more in depth or even written down somewhere for those new to the game genre or/and period.

It's precisely the engine what attracts me most of this game. I had an entire napkin sketch to adapt this to the Classical Age period(that I'm more familiar with given my long-term interest in that period in general and the Peloponnesian War in particular) as soon as the modding docs came out. Maybe one day ...
