B1776. Aegis ashore late or no detection of russian BMs

Post by Nikel »

2 Aegis Ashore installations in Europe, in Poland and Romania.

In Poland with the 3 faces radar, Romania with the 2 faces.

Target in Berlin.

Several russian nuclear BMs: Rubezh, Sarmat (2 places) and Bulava.

Result:

The 3 faces radar detects the BMs too late and will not fire the SM-3 missiles (vs the Bulava rarely).

The 2 faces radar never detects the BMs, of course no fire.

Video of how the Manual engage target red messages change.

For the in Bulava, there may be a small window in which the interceptors can be launched after the OODA loop. Noticed it at 2x, at 15x impossible.

Sounds like a DB data issue, besides Aegis Ashore are not meant to be used alone.

A nice report about European BMD

Thanks for the answer and the link.

I started testing the German Arrow 3 and ended with this :)

Edited the post above.

Video with more red message phases.

And one of the times several interceptors were launched vs the Bulava RV, it was at x2.

Vs the other 2 types of BMs not even at x2.

Added the USA SBIRS sats and the launching is detected and you may track the trajectory of the russian BMs, however most of the time the red message is insufficient tracking data for BMD engagement.

Here is an example of interceptors launching vs the Bulava after adding the sats, this time x15.

AN/TPY-2 radar in Turkey added. Of course not useful vs russian BMs.

Added one Burke in the Mediterranean, AEGIS and armed with SM-3 missiles.

But the ship also has the same problem vs the Sarmat and the Rubezh BMs than the AEGIS Ashore.

Also useless vs the Bulava like the Romanian AEGIS Ashore, only the one in Poland engages the Bulava.

Save attached with all the stuff added so far.

Added Arrow 3 for comparison.

Is able to engage and defeat the Sarmat (from 2 locations). Example video below.

Will engage and defeat the Rubezh in 1 of 2 tests.

Will not engage the Bulava in 3 tests. Red message the same, insufficient tracking data for BMD engagement.

Part of the problem with the Saber is the missiles are too close. They're above the max altitude of the AEGIS radar (1500km) for most of the engagement window. By the time they are below that, it's to late to take the shot.

Moving the Sabers back to the edge of their range did result in some shots in my tests but they where trailing shots, after the missiles passed the AEGISs position. We may need to increase the sensitivity of the AEGISs radar. I'll leave that up to the DB team.

Thanks.

I thought it was related with the satellites not passing the tracking of the BMs to the SM-3 platforms.

And is saturday night!

Sorry, I am not requesting any fix, just posting what seems interesting to me, perhaps it is not :)

Take all the time you need if you consider there is something to change/fix.

This is indeed something with the values of the AEGIS radar ashore.

Thanks for the tests
