Does World in Flames work well on Linux in 2025

Post by rexursus2 »

I could use some feedback before I risk $140 bucks on a game that may or may not work?

Is there a way to buy the game then add it to my steam collection?

Can I use the latest iteration of Wine with this?

I have Ubuntu 24.04

I want to get this if they ever implement an ai to play against.

Well, I see it in euros, but I still think it costs about 100$

An advice: if you are not too eager to get it, I have seen it down to 50% or even 20% of that price in periodical special offers.

This is a wonderful game, or could be, but you need to know:

- That it has some very nasty bugs that are not addressed by the developer, and will probably not be for a long time if ever. If you play yoy'll need to learn to edit the game data txt, and it aint easy.
. That unless you are a WIF player previously (the board game) there will be a lot of things that you'll not understand and a lot of things that you don't know you can do, unless you learn them through practice with other veteran players, in spite of the manual and/or tutorials.

1) I don't believe there is a steam license for MWiF
2) I don't believe that this windows game will work on linux
3) You might be able to get it to work on linux if you create a Virtual Machine and run windows on linux

Do not pay more than $20US. It's on sale for that price regularly.

I have Linux Mint 21.2. There used to be a lag issue, but with Wine 10.0 game runs great. That said, as others mentioned, I'd wait for a sale as in different distros you may have different results.

yep, i already found some weird glitches with a few forms while doing the tutorials... thought i don't care BUT nope, this won't do the trick. i'll need these forms working when i'm playing the game, right?!

after some endeavors in trying to make it work under wine (for me...) and later playonlinux (still wine) and at last with winboat - what a hoot! - i'm back to my old and trusty win7 laptop...

i'm not sad, mind you - not at all. but hey, it would have been so much more convenient on my linux laptop than having two computers running all the time.

since the linux platform isn't supported the following report on the glitches i found won't go into the tech-support forum - but still, there might be others who run into the same problems or have a cure for what's messing with my setup - so, here goes:

my setup:
  • debian 13 (stable)
  • i3-wm and/or xfce4-de (tried both)
  • wine Version: 10.0~repack-6
  • winetricks (trying different font packs incl. mscorefonts)
game installs, runs and looks great - BUT...

glitches:
  • minor - Interactive Tutorial Control Form (a scrollbar is visible - commentary/instructions button is useless)
  • minor - Contextual Help Information Form (help text starts in the middle, can be scrolled up and down but something's off here...)
  • major - Supply Sources and Paths Form (Minors button opens list but isn't switching back when selecting names, minors list stays until the form is closed.)
  • major - Relations Form (buttons on top for axis / allied relations are off and scroll horizontally, axis list works, allied list doesn't show - seems to be under axis list - this form would be useless!)
that's all from me - i didn't look further... i couldn't fix these problems - if you're using wine to run MWiF and you don't see any of these problems please tell, thanks in advance.

cheers!
