Big Campaign. Riga on turn 1

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Big Campaign. Riga on turn 1

Post by Avenger »

I have played my opening several times and I can get to the outskirts of Riga with ease, sometimes with several movement points (Seven MP I think), but I seem unable to attack. Is it possible to attack and capture Riga on the opening turn?

Riga is difficult, if not impossible to take on turn 1. You'd have to cross the major river with an entire panzer corps and take your chances on a hasty attack on it from the rear is my guess.

It might be better to simply wait for AGN infantry to get there and grab the place later on. Riga is a dead end strategically and there's better places for Panzer Group 4 to establish a bridgehead across the Dvina with objectives like Pskov and ultimately Leningrad in mind.

You can take Riga easily on turn 1, you only need to cross the major river [:)]

Don't bother trying to take Riga on the first turn you'll just have Pz too far from supply. I took it on the second turn and it was undefended, same thing with Minsk I outflanked the Soviet units on turn one and had the 7th Pz Div in Minsk with the XXXIX Pz Corps close behind on turn 2.

Is that typical? I can understand forces fleeing Riga but I expected at least some speed bumps in and around Minsk some units were to the West but nothing was in Minsk.

Sometimes the AI heavily defends cities, sometimes it doesn't. In a challenging test vs the Soviet AI, the AI had placed 40 divisions in Leningrad and surrounding hexes.

It is possible. Either with the 36th mot and 6th tanks or with the totenkopf, add to the XXXXI Corp. Add pioneers and flak, and it should be possible to break into the city. I have played Road to Leningrad several times and recommend using very few mot units near Riga. The majority should cross the river at Daugavpils.

Just an FYI, you do realize you are resurrecting a necro 15 year old thread?

Most likely folks have moved on to other games and or WITE2, so don't expect much of a response here.

Riga can be taken on turn one without worries.

Use only infantry to break open wide holes. Tanks can advance to far side of the river. I've seen 1 tank div take it with support multiple times.

I use 2 in a hasty b/c one time in my ancient past i failed with 1.
