Reset Windows 11 - Need to reinstall WITPAE

Post by irfanahmed1979 »

Hi,
Due to some problems with my PC I had to reset my PC which meant that Windows 11 reinstalled itself and I lost all my third party apps. Now I have to reinstall War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition but I don't want to lose my saved files or my mods. I also used some map and graphics enhancement mods and the install folder is intact on a seperate drive.

What is the best way to go about it?

Regards

P.S. Sorry for bothering you guys on the eve of Christmas

Not sure if the reset clears everything out, but re-installation of Win 11 should not do so. First check your file system for folders called Matrix Games and within that a folder called War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition. If you have all your data in that but the game still does not start you can download the base game and desired update patch from the Matrix Website - caveat - you must have registered your game on the Matrix site when you bought it.

Update patches:
.1126a or B = latest official patches. They are the same except that the B version puts a game starting shortcut on your desktop that properly points directly to the game .exe program while the 'a' version leaves the original shortcut that points to a menu program (autorun.exe) that no longer works and should be deleted. You can then make a shortcut by finding the .exe file, right clicking on it, choosing 'create shortcut' and then moving the shortcut to your desktop.

The .1128 Beta program is the current update which is still being tested and debugged, but many users are already using it and finding it more than satisfactory. It puts a good shortcut icon on your desktop.

The .1127 version may still be available. It added a few new complications in the off-map bases that users objected to, but those who use it say it runs well. AFAIK the shortcut is good.

Also note that you can use the Seabee program to set up your switches in the shortcut to make the game run smoothly.

If you cannot retrieve your old data, you might get Map mods and other user tweaks in the Modding section of this forum.

Thanks!

I can now run the game and play my saved games. However, each time I load a saved game, it first gives me a warning about Hex data being different.

Oh oh - you were using a modified map before and now you have the basic game map I suspect. The ART folder files show the artwork for the maps for your pleasure but the computer needs the data files that describe what bases, land features, sea features, hex sides industries, roads, etc are in each hex, plus the hex side data that lets ships and LCUs pass through it or not.

I believe pwhex e.dat is one of the files and I think the two .dll files below it are what the computer uses to handle the map. If you were previously using the Extended map with Stacking Limits those data files were different so the computer is warning you things may not work as you expect. For example the stock map lets you send a TF from Abadan directly to Aden entirely off-map. The Extended map puts some land in between the two so that you have to go on-map and sail a few hexes around the land before you go off-map again to get to the other base. There are also some additional bases near Singapore on the Extended map.

If you patched up to the latest version .1128 Beta it has its own map with correct data files for the artwork but your previous saves will not have the same data so you might get that message for a long time whenever you load a saved game. Not sure what all the map changes were in .1128 so not sure what conflicts might arise. One that might happen is that the newer map has a base in a different hex than the old map and any LCUs you had at that base in your saved game will not be at the base in the new version. If it's an off-map base the LCUs may be lost for the rest of the game!

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll start a new game. I still have my mod. Can I have link to the 1128 patch? Will it make my mod incompatible? I only used the editor to make this mod.

It might but I'd wait for 1128 patch still under Beta. Stick to 26b.
