Explosions animations and sounds not matching units destroyed

Post by DIVM »

This might be silly, but I used to love when in Southern Storm the explosions animations (and less accurately the sounds) would match the actual number of vehicles hit. Especially since one of my young boys likes to seat and watch the turn resolutions with me, and enjoy when we would see the explosions repeating and meaning we had hit more enemies. I believe it wouldn't go exactly 1:1 after certain number (4? 5?), maybe less for sound (3?); but it would be fairly accurate animating image and sound most of the times (1 to 4 units hit).

Now, it is often showing 2-3 explosions and sounds and then you see only one unit hit.

The explosions should match the (vehicle) hits, like in Southern Storm, unless it involves unobserved artillery strikes (and you have fog-of-war enabled).

The sound effects playback was re-designed since Southern Storm, actually playing more and more diverse weapon sounds now, but limiting the number of sounds from the same type of weapon to two IIRC.

Well, visually I can confirm they are not matching. It happens fairly often that we see 2-3 explosions (and sounds) and then it is only 1 unit hit.

Unless you have have a classified detection of the target, the target's step count is subject to fog-of-war, and most likely being under reported, so you might see a smaller observed step count reduction than you have seen hit animations.
The game also models overkill (insufficient coordination between the attacker's shooters, causing them to engage the same target).
Nevertheless, we'll keep an eye out for a potential mismatch.

I played two scenarios in single player tonight and it didn't happen at all. It was working fine. I wonder if this is something that only affects MP? Or it might be any of the other reasons you mentioned. I will keep an eye too. Thanks for the explanation.

I noticed this happens during the Replay mode for a Multiplayer game. There are three explosion animations per one kill.

Glad someone else can confirm it !! It is a noticeable difference with single player, where animations and sounds match perfectly the units hit. I play both in Grognard mode, so it shouldn't be a settings issue.

Based on Discord responses I created this as FPSS-6765 at the beginning of the month.
