Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #3. The Atlantic.

(1) Of course after getting everything working like they wanted the CW and France had no desire for potential combat vs German U-boats & Italian Subs in the Faeroes Gap.

(2) And to be truthful, neither did the axis (Germany or Italy) post allied naval moves, which put very strong escorts into the sea area.

(3) However; after the drumming the Italian navy took both off the Italian Coast and in the West Med, the Italians were on tilt.

(4) They weighed the options and determined with storm in the sea areas that they would take the risk in both the Faeroes Gap and Bay of Biscay.

(5) The Italians were looking for payback!

(6) Spoiler Alert - they didn't get it -- well at least in the Faeroes Gap.

(1) Neither did they (the Italians) get payback in the Bay of Biscay, with failed searches for both sides.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #5. Weather & Actions.

(1) Weather D10=2+1=3, weather clears drastically across all weather zones except for rain in the arctic.

(2) First fine weather impulse in north temperate since 12JA41AX12 & in med since 13SO41AL03.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #5. Impulse Planning. Euro-Axis.

Germany – Land
1. Rail to coast & reorg, move and rebase air as necessary to exceed Nazi-Soviet pact garrison break by 2; which ensures that the Soviets will not be able to reestablish during their impulse.
2. Optimize Reich Air Defense subject to (1), which has higher priority.
3. Optimize anti-partisan garrisons subject to (1) & (2) higher priorities.

Italy – Naval
1. Reestablish supply to North Africa (through the West Med).
2. Reestablish shipment by sea of Sardinia Coal RP (NW-1 Cagliari).
3. Send out 2 reorg Italian Sub Gp to Bay of Biscay; but do NOT search while allied air can fly.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #5. Asian Theater.

Army Group Yamamoto.
(1) I wonder how many folks if playing over Vassal or over Paper & Cardboard would have missed that Yamamoto HQ-I and, subsequently all attached ground & air units are out of supply.

(2) In fact, I was so sure that it was a bug I check supply in several MWIF versions going back to 3.2.0.

(3) Yamamoto was in supply and supplied several units from his current position last turn during snow; so shouldn't he be in supply as well as several additional units in fine weather!

(4) The thing that changed was the FIC partisan, which blocks supply through Hanoi back to Japan.

(5) But that should be ok as Yamamoto can trance supply to Canton then to Japan.

(6) Or can he?

(7) After spending 10 minutes or so looking this over I finally noticed that he CANNOT!

(8) The road hex west of Changsha is Chinese controlled, which would take Yamamoto 2 more hexes, for a total of 4, to get around and to Canton and then 1 more hex for a total of 5 to get to Japan; one greater than 4 fine weather supply range.

(9) Low and behold, MWIF had it right; Yamamoto is indeed out of supply.

(10) Again, I muse how many folks would have missed this if playing over Vassal or the board?

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #5. Impulse Planning. Japan - Land (Addendum).

Japan – Land
1. Reestablish supply (i.e., OOS KOR MIL flip control Hsiang Road hex) to Yamamoto’s Army Gp
2. Max effort ground strike (2 air Gps, arty div, po=0.488) vs Chengtu (Chiang HQ-I, 8th inf army).
3. If HQ-I or inf army flipped, assault and capture Chengtu.
4. Position 2nd SNLF Mar div to capture Sian if left unscreened & snow or fine weather.
5. Secure Yan Mtns & shipment of MAN RP 67,145.
6. Transfer Yamashita HQ to Northern & eventually Central China
7. Eliminate CCP Cav Div without loss.
8. Secure Northern & Central China with minimum flips.

Addendum
9. Forgot to include the above specifics for Japan.
10. However; there's an error in the planning, which MWIF quickly "slapped me down" when I looked to execute.
11. Do you see it?
12. Well, it's item (2) above, which is the max effort ground strike vs the 2 Nationalists units in Chengtu.
13. The ground strike isn't possible because supply to Yamamoto and his army group (especially his attached planes) isn't, and can't be, restored until the movement phase, which occurs AFTER the ground strike phase!
14. The question now is will Yamamoto proceed with the attack Chengtu in disobedience to branch 2f0 of his attack planning guidance document?
15. At the time of this writing, even I don't know the answer to that question.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #5. Med.

West Med. Combat Logs.
(1) Air-to-Air battles in MWIF (WIF), in my experience, has the largest variation of results than any other battle type (air, land or sea!).

(2) The RN and Fr navy are NOT happy with RAF fighter command!

Round 2.
(1) Even after taking a bad beating in the Naval Air (especially in the air-to-air); the RN & Fr navy still have a good chance to catch the Italian TRS Gp [2] & CP [0] unescorted in a surface battle.

(2) Specifically, 50% x 70% = 35% to catch them in surface unescorted.

(3) The risk; however, is the 30% chance that the RN/Fr will have to fight another naval air without fighter coverage.

(4) They do have a Nimrod CAG that can absorb any loss before the RAF aborts from the air battle thus saving their Sunderland N4 & Blenheim L3.

(5) Of course, the remaining RN (BB & CVL) and Fr (BB) warships would likely take a beating in this 30% risk case.

(6) However; in the 35% surface case they would have a field day against the lone (unescorted) It TRS Gp & CP.

(7) Both sides failed to find for a second round of naval combat.

(8) However; the RN/Fr will get another chance in their impulse.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #6. Impulse Planning.

USA (neutral) – Combine
1. Deploy Nimitz to Maui, so that the 105 mm arty & 40 mm AA (Honolulu) can be redeployed to Midway, currently garrisoned by a garrison corps.
2. Nimitz to Maui this impulse & redeployments, including Nimitz back to Honolulu next “available” US impulse.
3. If the allies get another impulse this turn, then the next “available” US impulse with be that one; otherwise, will have to wait after naval moves required for US North Atlantic & East Coast escorts.
4. Clark HQ-I & US 1st eng mot div to Iceland (E1-Reykjavik).
5. NOTE. US B-18A, B-18 (strategic) bomber wings in Newport, Rhode Island is within air rebase range (barley) of Cape Farewell, Greenland; and thus are positioned to rebase to the UK via that route when the US finally manages to get into the war against Germany.
